mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 5hmore WIP! my code-centric daw has long had motion recording and lfos - you just add a call to m() anywhere in the code, or cmd-click a knob to record [1st half vid]; thats great for lfo-type motion. but how to automate over songs? no sweat, now I have automation lane per knob! mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 12/10/2026no no magpie is right, its gotta be a quill now. with little sort of secondary motion as you swoosh it around. and... and... occasional ink splodges and splatters... and 010

mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 11/10/2026its transpiled to c code, so its kinda c order. then as it runs it renders its own state, but with most edits writing back into the source code as the source of truth. and it has some hot reloaded bits, and some vm bits (for mininotation) aka total hodgepodge :) 100
mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 11/10/2026i have a few screenshots and vids in my bsky history over the last month or two but im still figuring it out! will keep posting as i go. and feel free to ask any qs :) love discussions! 000
mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 11/10/2026(what a gorgeous floof!) shes in theory siberian, but looks nothing like her half sibling and everyone asks if shes a ragdoll! so now we just say shes a ragberian :) shes incredibly floofy and blue eyed. and your baby? 110
mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 11/10/2026to your code point: yes! because its a DSL, (that compiles to c), i made it so that any function (well, I call them modules as they can have state), also can present an imgui style 'draw my ui' function, and another 'draw a passive viz in the left gutter' and that... unlocked everything basically. 030
mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 11/10/2026re goal: good q. it is: make music with it! its actually a key thing that driving it. 99% of the tools ive ever made in my life (including lbp, dreams, plinky) i rarely actually use to make the thing. like i dont use them. this has bugged me for years. so this one, i am gonna keep going til i use it 000
mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 11/10/2026thanks! one of the routes i went down had blocks of code you could move around a 2d surface, but I found myself spending too long 'managing' the space. I think if i had a projector/multitouch setup it would rock (per your ref), but on trackpad, it sucked and i backtracked. 100
mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 11/10/2026all of the above :) and photos. phew, im not going mad. or not the only mad one. :) high five 020

mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 11/10/2026oh damn i do appear to be making a code-centric daw. still enjoying making it, slow/incremental as that process is. i do find that the more i visualize stuff, the more i like it. really makes me wonder why we didn't historically integate live data viz into more *code* editors. 6417

mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 10/10/2026hm, maybe. intermingled for sure :) climate emergency has been happening and documented (exxon docs etc) for 50+ years in some sense; but maybe you're saying empathy sucked 50 years ago. maybe, but it feels less now (to me) than 20 years ago. idk, nitpicking. 'it all sucks' :( 120
mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 10/10/2026the 2020s are full of grief eh. from genocide to climate emergency to entire professions imploding / at best transforming; and on and on! yet were also in the least empathetic culture i can remember. mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 09/10/2026thats what we did with ragdollkungfu on steam! for midgame join too. not using any malloc is a magical superpower :) just marked first and last global variable with linker trick, memcpy zip and send over network/save. dynamic memory was a mistake :) (not kidding). also see many ps1 era games :) 120
mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 09/10/2026forth is an old and bonkers language, one layer up from assembly :) mr lottes has a crazy x64 assembly environment thnig that is... ultra minimal. but it has some clever restrictons that make tooling around it potentially quite fun. he doesnt need live reload tho. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forth_(...en.wikipedia.orgForth (programming language) - Wikipedia 100

mmalex @mmalex.bsky.social · 09/10/2026yes! I think with some mild restrictions, this could be made to work amazingly well. super hard to do for general code tho! if i squint at your ideas a bit, i kinda see the esoteric forth-like world that timothy lottes has long espoused, but with a debugger. mmm, would be lovely 110
