Our analysis shows that 1 in 3 defendants sentenced to death in Tennessee has been from Memphis — a pattern that researchers say shows how prosecutors use their power. At least 77 people from Shelby County have been sent to death row since the 1970s, but most of those sentences were overturned.

The Memphis Safe Task Force has swept up more than 800 immigrants whom law enforcement deemed to be unlawfully present in the United States. Of those, just 2% — or 17 — were also arrested for violent crimes, our analysis found. Being unlawfully present on its own is a civil, not a criminal, offense.

“I stopped and stood next to (the marshal), & then pretty much simultaneously I got hit. The push bar hits me in the legs, upper legs, torso & around my waist, so I fall forward, because I can’t get my arms up.
