5/ The real predictor of lower sexual satisfaction wasn't non-monogamy—it was secrecy—among the men in our sample. Men hiding other partners from their partner reported worse sexual satisfaction. #SexResearch #NonMonogamy #RelationshipScience

4/ CNM folks were more likely to have ever tested for STIs — but no higher diagnosis rate.

3/ Women with additional partners reported more desire & satisfaction with their other partner than with their more established partner. Also more arousal with their other partner than monogamous women reported with their only partner. Unsurprising, since these relationships are often more novel.

2/ Men with multiple partners men were a bit less likely to report early ejaculatory symptoms. But otherwise, sexual functioning: largely the same whether you're monogamous or not, CNM or not. There was no evidence that having multiple partners is riskier for sexual wellbeing.

"luonnollinen" osa ihmisen repertuaaria.

Since we did not find the same interaction when comparing those with one vs multiple partners, the findings suggest that current available sources of eroticism & nurturance (i.e. other partners) may matter less than the orientations used to approach & manage partnerships (e.g. identifying as CNM).
000
Michelle Larva @mlarva.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
This suggests that eroticism may not be as crucial to CNM individuals’ satisfaction in their primary relationships compared to nurturance. Similarly, CNM individuals in relationships characterized by lower nurturance may still feel generally satisfied if sufficient eroticism is present.
100
Michelle Larva @mlarva.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
But for CNM folks, N and E interacted: When eroticism between the respondent and primary partner was low, nurturance had a strong positive association with satisfaction. Eroticism mattered only when nurturance was low. When nurturance was high, eroticism was not associated with satisfaction.

Michelle Larva @mlarva.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
For monogamous individuals, nurturance and eroticism were again consistently linked to satisfaction—so the amount of one did not influence the importance of the other. It may be typical and ideal for monogamous individuals to seek both sexual passion and secure companionship from their partner.

Michelle Larva @mlarva.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
We found that, across single- and multi-partnered people, nurturance and eroticism were positively, consistently (regardless of the level of the other element) associated with relationship satisfaction. Interestingly, the association looked different when we compared monogamous and CNM folks...

Our sample included: * Single-partnered individuals (n=289) * Multi-partnered individuals (n=335) Some participants identified as Monogamous (n=217) and some CNM (n=399), so we explored how the aforementioned factors differ by current relationship behavior & identity.

Michelle Larva @mlarva.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
The study examines nurturance (warm loving feelings, closeness, caring) and eroticism (sexual passion, bodily pleasure, arousal) as key factors in romantic satisfaction. While monogamous relationships typically rely on both, CNM #relationships may distribute these needs across multiple partners.
