Great video. Argument aside, I really like the Macross logo hat.

Sweet little spot from U.S. weatherman Al Roker, discussing his daily commute on a Brompton through the streets of midtown Manhattan - at 4 o'clock in the morning! Happy #BicycleBirthday, Al! Born August 20, 1954

An underrated benefit of having a cargo e-bike: not only has it reduced my driving by a lot, but when I’m not hauling anything bigger than a bag of groceries, I now use my regular bike for most errands. Makes my e-bike odometer less impressive but it’s more exercise.

Loading my cargo e-bike at the local co-op. Stopped by a guy curious about it. (R&M Load 75, it gets looks.) He was interested in something like it, but he’s 80. Pointed him to e-trikes with cargo capacity, and local bike shops that can help. I hope I’m as curious when I’m that old!

That's bad. Forgetting to unlock your cafe lock and rolling your (very heavy) cargo ebike off of its stand and straight into a spoke is definitely worse.

Works but: 1. Title is AAAS: Keyword search for query 2. Articles don't show your name as author 3. No tagging for subcategories of your articles (I know it's been a while, but the 'Things I Won't Work With' series is always nice to come back to, and it takes some searching.)

Was stopped outside a big box store last weekend by two women who were marveling at my bakfiets. They claimed they had never seen anything like it. (Reasonable. I live in a relatively small city and I have the only bakfiets in town that I've seen.) At first they asked if it was a recumbent!

She clearly had better things to be doing than paying attention while she drove. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, no. I was almost hit by an eighteen year old this morning, who didn't pay attention turning left across the street and into the parking lot of a store. Had to jam on the brakes. If I'd been a slow moving pedestrian, or slower to react, I might've been killed. All so she can drive to the store.

On closer inspection, the back bicycle might have a fastener for a coaster brake on the near chain stay. Still…

Amazing picture. I don't see either rod or coaster brakes on any of those bikes. Fixies, maybe?

Sympathies. Every big storm here and it's the "Flight of the Chainsaws" as people go and deal with all the branches that came down. I've paid more money for tree services than for computers the past four years.

A teal book cover, with a graphic. Dear Blind Lady is the title with a pair of sunglasses as the B and a white cane as the I. The author name Elsa Sjunneson is printed inside the cane. a post it reads “but not like Helen Keller” with the subtitle of “disability advice you didn’t know you needed” at the bottom

(In Greece, the mini-splits in the apartment we stayed in had cooling, as one expect, but in, say, the UK, this is very different.)

I expect your heat pump can do this fine. It's what it's hooked up to (specifically an air-to-air exchanger that can pump heat from indoors to the outdoors, like from a mini-split or ducted air system, rather than an air-to-liquid exchanger like a closed water radiator/underfloor heater).

It was something of a shock, and I'm not sure how big of a thing this is, but for example, a quick browse of a UK based heat-pump pros/cons website is about 90% heating and almost no mention of cooling other than 'it's an option for some'.

I have learned in the past couple of days that many if not most of the heat pump configurations used for heating in Europe are configured such that they cannot be used for cooling. No air-to-air exchange. As someone living in the American Midwest this seems like madness, but it explains a lot.

Looks like a bunch of people in Europe have heat pumps that are great for heating but useless for cooling. As someone in the Midwest this looks like madness. (I'm sure there are reasons, including efficiency and placement of air-air exchangers, but still …)

Sound like people aren’t differentiating between different types of AC, either. Some are much more efficient than others.

Best cargo bike ever? Fun, uses repurposed materials, looks like it could ram the snot out of a car parked in the bike lane.
Cargo bike. The "cargo" part is a repurposed half of a metal canoe.

Where I live, it can hit both 40ºC (rarely) and -35 to -40ºC (very, very rarely, but it happens). 40ºC is dangerous and can kill you, particularly if you’re very young, old, or infirm. -40ºC will kill everyone without proper shelter. Sufficient heating is water the fish are swimming in.

@reckless.bsky.social I'm listening to the latest episode of Decoder, with the Wassym Bensaid. Every single vehicle CEO you bring on makes me want to never buy another car again, and spend my transportation dollars on e-bikes and mass transit. The buttons comments in particular are infuriating.

The past week had been unseasonably warm (30ºF warmer than average). To the point where I got all the bikes out of the garage to make sure they had air in the tires and not too many cobwebs. Even put the batteries back in the e-bikes. Today I’m just glad my Surly still has snow tires on. ❄️

Have been using Firefox for basically as long as it's been out. It's my daily driver for work, and I have donated (and would be happy to continue to donate) for a non-Chrome, multi-platform vendor that has security, privacy, and web standards compatibility. If it becomes an 'AI Browser' I'm gone.
