It's easier than it was. For instance JSTOR lets anyone set up an account with them that will let you access 100 articles a year. Which is a lot & not a lot depending on need. I fully acknowledge that engineering & hardcore scientific material can be much more difficult though.

I was puzzled for a bit by "cat plague" in CA back in 2004. & it's not as if pneumonic plague is different to "regular" plague. It's just affecting a different part of your body. I take a couple of days off & boom, there's a pandemic of stupid over-reaction (& that woman's damned book is back).

WTF is going on?! These Atlanta market election ads are weird AF. Now I'm getting anti-Jackson attack ads that are all about HIS support for data centers. Can we just go back to the usual coded bigotry & police-sponsored anti-Dem attack ads.

Really wish democrats would stand up for taxes. Not even advocate for higher taxes. But try to drive it home to people that taxes are a way for all of us to pool a small piece of our individual resources to serve collective goals.

Huh. GOP attack ads are now hitting Keisha Bottoms for supporting data centers when she was mayor. Thought GOP was still into data centers.

Funny discussion - what would have allowed the Fellowship of the Ring to be more successful. Which firstly misses that it was massively successful. And secondly ignores how finely balanced everything was. An extra day of delay or earilness here or there, & Sauron wins the war & recovers the ring.

The casting of Interview With The Vampire (movie) is so whacky. But although Pitt is all wrong he did a great job of emphasizing everything I hate about Louie. He's such a fucking whiner. A casual slaveholder who gets precious once he needed to eat people. & Pitt is worse than Reeves in Dracula.

Ah, the terrible twenties. This civvie is really astounded that even that level of increase wouldn't be enough (if sustained). Suggests that the current regular budget is hopelessly inadequate.

Indeed. Though personally, it is past time we had a "come to jesus" moment (or adult conversation) about the alignment of defense spending, defense goals & expectations, & choices regarding government revenue extraction. Spend more, or do less, but either way, increase federal taxes.

There is that, and I suppose they have all of those monarchic traditional regime security concerns surrounding non-King competent military leadership. Which makes it so much more important to manage your affairs so that a capable modern military isn't needed. Or the lack exposed.

Seems if we're going to bulk the budget out to 1.5T we might be able to find some change in the couch to build and crewing some additional carriers, etc., to reduce (over time) the strain on the force. Maybe spend some on shipyards & improving maintenance timelines, but let's not get crazy

it's a little wild that the KSA is militarily-meh, given how the Kingdom grew into existence in the period up to the 1930s.

Also, if you are looking up the Zillow/Trulia listing you get to see what they've done with the place in terms of upgrades, mods, decoration, since they moved in. Which can be super interesting, and is def. harmless.

So, in this context, would it be fair to say that, from the Israeli side, ceasefire discussions involving the USA were primarily about managing the Biden administration to sustain IDF freedom of action in service off Netanyahu's policy goals? Which US side didn't understand?

& that's not even required. For an example look at Indian villagers w. sticks handling a leopard that has made some very poor choices. Sure it lashes out & can inflict a nasty wound, but it also ends up terrified, exhausted, & cornered. youtu.be/rRVY3qphXGM

This definitely hits hard. Any casual follower of things military and/or aerospace over the last 30 years should recognize the validity of this XKCD flowchart.
An XKCD Comic. The comic provides a flowchart entitled "Aerospace Engineer Problem-solving Flowchart."

The stages are
1 - START
2 - Could we solve this problem by building giant airships again?
There is a single exiting arrow labelled "NO"
3 - Try other solutions
There are four exiting arrows that leave the edge of the comic to what are no doubt almost anything else imaginable that is slightly practical.

Unlike giant airships.

As you say, if you are going to do it, then do it properly & reliably. Long-drop is clearly one. While I'm not aware of any guillotine failures, there is clearly a modern objection to dismemberment - though apparently not judicial murder or prolonged suffering. USA 🤷‍♂️ We do better with cats FFS.

Agency. What is it? An unknowable concept for too many Americans when it comes to the developing world. It's been weird to see folks denounce imperialism etc., & simultaneously struggle to accept the idea that local actors have goals & objectives that may exploit intersections with US goals.

Oh! and the other thing is we can all stand around & see on a day-to-day basis how difficult it is for the USG to exercise substantive influence over Israeli policy, but somehow we are expected to accept the past-CIA was running a bunch of newly independent foreign nations like hand-puppets.

Its a little like a modern person denouncing the Russian autocracy of Tsar Nicholas II as a brutal police state with no awareness, or at least, acknowledgement, of how mild it was compared to what replaced it.

I'm genuinely, negatively, impressed that Hegseth sees the military as a modern equivalent of a bunch of dudes in a shield wall. But with no modern shield-bearers, pages, horse-holders, sutlers, victualers, surgeons, etc. Just a bunch of warriors waiting to starve or shit themselves to death.

Hmm, took a moment to check in on MBDA Meteor integration with the F-35. Was surprised to discover that this is now "scheduled" for the early 2030s. But yay!! First flight happened last year. Of course original planned in-service date was 2024, so a bit of slip and sliding there.

Does Boeing have anything like the engineering bandwidth to simultaneously stand up two new military designs with different requirements, in addition to stumbling through certification of its various civil aircraft, & struggling to unfuck the Red Hawk program?

Are there any explicit justifications, ludicrous or venal, for not paying? Or is it one of those years when the US is just not on the ball in terms of making its payment? Which, IIRC, has definitely happened in the past.

I really don't get it. It's not like Trump is going to have them carted off to a dank basement somewhere to be tortured into signing a nonsense confession and then be executed or sentenced to 10 yrs in an Alaskan gulag. So why grovel like this?

Did I do the math wrong? Is Trump pledging to throw down 1.25 trillion dollars if we all vote GOP? $5,000 per adult at c. 250 million USA adults. These numbers are deranged - Lukashenko makes more sense.

It is truly exhausting how comprehensively shit the online experience has become. - Paying a bill is an obstacle course. - Searching a library catalog is aggressively hostile - and of course Google doesn't want you to find anything at all anymore It all wastes so much of a user's time.

Yup. But try effectively communicating to senior researchers that you can't just be hitting on interns and junior researchers. And that just because they aren't working under you on a project right now doesn't change the fundamental power dynamics. It's like talking to a nodding wall.

Well I'm suitably amused. Jessica Jones gave up on being a P.I. and got a law degree. Leaning into her name all the way.
picture of a name plate for a professional office.

reads
Law Office of Jessica Lea Jones - Defender of Justice - Advocate for the People.

The "lea" part of her name is in tiny print oriented vertically between Jessica and Jones.

You cannot tell me that she is not VERY aware of the jessica jones's comics.

Saw a Cybercab bopping around East Atlanta, closely pursued by a model Y chase car. It's not bad looking. Pity its entire conception and "business" model is the twisted fever dream of an overly online techno-optimist billionaire nazi.

Fun thing, impeachment and/or denying funding are the only meaningful checks on executive power at the disposal of the U.S. Congress. The knowers of things regularly reiterate that using either is politically bad & must not be done. Meaning, no real Congressional checks exist. Lawsuits?

Just spent the weekend driving 1,000 miles cross country and was interested to note a LOT of trucks cruising along 5 mph UNDER the limit, which is unusual. Presumably cost of fuel is outweighing cost of time. At $6.50 to $6.95 in GA & AL I suppose that isn't surprising.

How the fuck is it reasonable that people don't have to pay income tax on up to $25,000 in tips? Basically I get to pay tax on $25,000 more income simply because I get a salary?

that's interesting. If someone's notion of imperialism is framed in this way it is not surprising that it would hollow itself out as the extractive & oppressive nature of the operation becomes more undeniable. And presumably Western ideologies of democracy etc were equally corrosive to self image.

mkbinder.bsky.social @mkbinder.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I'm curious who this idea mattered for. I presume, that the conquered imperial territories didn't labor under this notion, & I doubt the conquering generation did, whatever superiority they postulated. They knew what they did. So, was this a necessary self-deception for the 1930s administrators?

Things I don't miss. The commercial large tractor feed dot matrix printer contained within a large acoustic hood. Useful for running off huge daily reports and multiforms. But so fucking loud.
