I knew I loved this movie when it ended like 2001.

There is no other movie like this.

#BelmontsCurse seems great--and I will play the final version--but that's precisely why this particular story detail sticks in my craw. I mean, maybe Sypha will show up as a ghost to mentor Rose, Jedi-style. That would be better than nothing, but God... ...I am just so sick of this fucking trope.

020

MJ Weise @mjweise.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

It's not exactly impossible, folks. Carol Danvers doesn't have to DIE for there to be another Marvel, does she? There is no excuse for this trope, especially not when it's an existing character who had her own life and agency for multiple seasons of a TV show and at least one other game.

110

MJ Weise @mjweise.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

I like witches, and I love Sypha. She was far and away the coolest thing about the #Castlevania show, which was the first time anyone seemed to know what to do with the game's lore in an insightful way. I love that #BelmontsCurse is building on that, but does it have to do so by killing her?

110

MJ Weise @mjweise.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

I was really looking forward to a badass protagonist who perfectly balances the masculine/feminine, physical/spiritual, energy of her parents in a fluid way. Rose Belmont still feels that way in gameplay--and it's joyfully awesome--but any time the cutscenes kick in I get a strange feeling.

MJ Weise @mjweise.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

I'm not saying father/daughter stories are a no-no. I'm not saying a girl can't love her dad, but God... does it HAVE to come at the expense of the mother? It just strikes me as lazy, an easy grab because you don't want to explore more nuanced power dynamics in a more complex gender configuration.

110

MJ Weise @mjweise.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

So much for the Bechdel Test. Yeah, I know it's not the only metric, but it's an easy one. Now instead of two awesome women we've got yet another Sad Dad and Daddy's Girl, who says "...father..." when she dies. *sigh* I mean, it's not Other M level, but still...

130

MJ Weise @mjweise.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

What is it with only having ONE badass woman at a time? The Mario Galaxy Movie had to damsel-ize Rosalina in order to center Peach, and now, what, the Belmonts can't have a cool daughter without her mother being dead?

120

MJ Weise @mjweise.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

#BelmontsCurse demo impressions: Wonderful game-feel. Perfect protagonist. Visuals that are liquid beauty. Everything I want in a #Castlevania game, except... ...fridging Sypha? No cool, folks. Not cool.

And NOTHING beats the apocalyptic chutzpa of FF6, the game where you DON'T save the world. (Well, maybe it's tied with Odin Sphere.)

110

MJ Weise @mjweise.bsky.social · 21/09/2026

These games are a hell of a one-two punch. Harrowing and apocalyptic, but also beautifully paced and sharply written. CT in particular has aged like wine, coming right at the moment that retro pixel art games today tend to emulate. It might be a perfect game.

I don't like anything they've made since as much as I liked Odin Sphere, but I like that they are weird and keep making games.

Think about the lives lost in Iraq and Afghanistan, the horrors we perpetrated there for no reason beyond fundamentalist bloodthirst, corporate greed, and racist hysteria. Over a million people dead, for nothing. Think about that

The movie or the show? The show is amazing, but the movie is like being fucked by a plutonium rod until you explode into flowers.

Saw this right after coming back from Spain and found it impossible not to take as a movie about Americans dying because neighbors here cannot just fucking talk to each other. A damning, and hilariously literal, portrait of suburban isolation.

It's the only film to ever match my Sunday School nightmares about Hell, the same way End of Evangelion is the only film to ever capture the horror of The Rapture for me. They'd made a great double feature.

What's eternally crazy to me is that Oshii "Ghost in the Shell" Mamoru got his start on Urusei Yatsura, and when he was allowed free rein it's like if David Lynch directed episodes of I Love Lucy. :P His farewell to the series, Beautiful Dreamer, is like Twin Peaks Season 3.

Given that her type has just gained mainstream power and acceptance in the ensuing decades makes it all the more galling. The ACCURATE update is to make her MORE abusive, enabled by politicians, and advertising her abuse on social media while raking in likes to cement a city council run.
