Another view showing the vertices. You can play with the app here: www.mjmtools.com/webgl/tutori... Beware it is not professional quality, I hacked up a little WebGL tutorial 5 or six years ago while exploring the "Rhombic Triacontahedron" with my Dad

Quick showcase of one of my favorite shapes, the Tetartoid - a polyhedron with 12 identical, irregular pentagonal faces. It occurs in nature in the mineral Cobaltite. I love it because it sits right on the line, visually, between natural and geometrical. Views from my basic "polyhedron modeler"

I wrote a little JavaScript program to model a puzzle that my dad had called “The Great Meteor” - I have no idea if that is some kind of official name for this pattern, but as you can see each “face” of the octahedron is the Q-Bert pattern (6 instead of 7 though)

Reminds me of the Mac terminal version of the old commodore 64 maze: 10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10
Screen capture of a terminal that has run a script called "maze.sh" that prints out an endless random stream of "\" and "/" characters, creating a maze. The script is displayed at the bottom of the screen, it is :

while [ 1 ]; do echo -n -e "\xe2\x95\xb((($RANDOM&1)+1))"; done

As a bonus here's the Ulam Spiral cycling through each frame with a 1º increase turn into 3D, off of the XY plane. The view remains stable, with the screen co-planar with the XY plane. Tons of weird shapes and "symbols" appear - what could it all mean? Likely nothing! But it looks cool :)

This is what happens when you draw a line connecting all of the points in the Ulam Spiral together in order, it looks like an old-school vector graphics video game scene
The Ulam Spiral (all of the prime numbers plotted on a spiraling number line) with the dots erased, and only the line connecting them drawnZoomed in view of the same image, showing a close-up of the "glass shard" effect along the corners of the spiralThe same close-up, now with the individual dots also visibleNow with the line removed, the classic, recognizable Ulam Spiral, with the center indicated by a red dot. You can see the straight lines that intriguingly appear in the spiral arranged vertically, horizontally, and at 45 degree angles.

Some interesting mollusk-like shapes produced by my spiral application. This is the "simple" spiral in 3D mode at 8M iterations - too slow to animate nicely, but the stills look amazing. Link in the reply to see for yourself, decrease the iteration count to animate #MathArt

I'm having trouble comprehending that something that big can be lumpy - I mean according to this image the "lumps" are bigger across than the entire Earth orbit around the Sun 🤯
Image from the Adler Planetarium website showing a size comparison between the star Betelgeuse and our solar system - the Sun is less than a pixel in the image, the entire Earth's orbit is a small circle inside the diameter of Betelgeuse, Jupiter's orbit is *almost* as wide as Betelgeuse, and Saturn's orbit is ~50% wider than Betelgeuse. It's HUGE

I was pretty enthralled with this one in Auckland on the volcano trail (can't remember the real name) in front of (I think) the military museum. It was like nothing I'd ever seen
Giant sparsely-leaved tree in Auckland, NZ that I encountered on a walk along a path up an ancient, dormant volcano. It has a gnarly trunk with massive above-ground roots and spreads out widely from only a few feet up its massively wide "trunk", though it does not have much of a trunk to speak of.Close-up of the "trunk" of the crazy Auckland treeClose-up of some of the sprawling above-ground roots of the treeWider view of the roots of the tree

Another mesmerizing one, you get endless subtly different effect just by changing the starting theta and phi angles - I think this one was originally 67 and 76. We are seeing the shape looking straight down onto the XY plane, when rotated you find that it is a hockey-puck shaped disk.

Just yesterday, with the latest greatest ChatGPT model, was steaming along on a complex bit of threading code when it dawned on me that the damn thing made a bad inference, and the process of proving it negated all of my time savings. The tech is fundamentally prone to error, and always will be.
Response from ChatGPT after proving it wrong about a code observation:

You’re right — with the code exactly as posted, the read-lock hold count in verifyParentChild() balances out. I miscounted because I mentally kept the original read lock “alive” through the if block, but you explicitly unlock() it before you ever do the downgrade lock().
