Mark J McCarthy @mjmcncycle.bsky.social · 19/06/2026It’s Scenedesmus per Euan Reavie, who got a sample. 240
Mark J McCarthy @mjmcncycle.bsky.social · 19/06/2026So the ‘theory’ has some validity, but there are problems (see my comments within the thread), starting with the bloom not being caused by cyanos, and the usual and incorrect ‘dismissal’ of the importance of nitrogen. 000
Mark J McCarthy @mjmcncycle.bsky.social · 18/06/2026One last important point. Treatments like H2O2 are band-aids, not ‘fixes’. Lysed algae cells release all of those nutrients back into the water. My concern would be replacing non-toxic green algae with cyanos using recycled nutrients to make biomass and N-rich toxins. 020
Mark J McCarthy @mjmcncycle.bsky.social · 18/06/2026And, the dominant taxa is Scenedesmus, a green algae (cannot fix atmospheric N), which means that it must make biomass from combined nitrogen. The problem here, among other things ofc, is nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus...not one or the other, BOTH! 110
Mark J McCarthy @mjmcncycle.bsky.social · 18/06/2026No, not "typically phosphate" or "rarely nitrogen". Both are required to make biomass, and N is just as likely to be 'limiting' (see Elser et al. 2007; Ecology Letters 10). This kind of antiquated approach to aquatic science has severely inhibited progress in mitigating eutrophication globally. 100
Mark J McCarthy @mjmcncycle.bsky.social · 04/06/2026Curious whether this is a distributor issue or a Shimadzu issue? Heard anything similar for them in Europe? 100
Mark J McCarthy @mjmcncycle.bsky.social · 02/06/2026Look forward to reading it. I assume that N loading was also reduced (‘nutrient reductions’)…and some would argue that a shift to N fixers is a clear step in the right direction. Keep reducing external loads, and internal/legacy loads will eventually take care of themselves? 010
