What’s Fivetran’s story, anyway? This is a wild work history, lol
LinkedIn screenshot of George Fraser, Fivetran CEO, showing a work history consisting of “Scientist at Emerald Therapeutics, 2011-2012” followed by CEO at Fivetran ever since.

I’m happy about the dbt/Fivetran merger. Ultimately, it’s better for the data community to have one big ETL company headed (hopefully) towards an IPO rather than two smaller ones stumbling along, hoping Databricks or Snowflake finally decide to acquire them.

the problem with being a data vendor is you only get to play with the shiny toys you’re building, not everyone else’s. super pumped to be back to being a practitioner soon 😀

Cube did a reorganization, which sadly eliminated my role from the company as a solutions engineer in pre-sales. I am open to work in solutions engineering, devrel, product marketing, and possibly other roles. DM if you have interest or roles that you could refer me to.

In the cuisine of Mexico City, quesadillas are not assumed to come with cheese unless specifically requested. This is in contrast to the rest of Mexico, where quesadillas are considered to include cheese by definition (quesadilla literally meaning "little cheesy thing" in Spanish).[9] This cultural trend cannot be traced back to a single origin.

This study evaluates the impact of a program leveraging large language models for virtual tutoring in secondary education in Nigeria. Using a randomized controlled trial, the program deployed Microsoft Copilot (powered by GPT-4) to support first-year senior secondary students in English language learning over six weeks. The intervention demonstrated a significant improvement of 0.31 standard deviation on an assessment that included English topics aligned with the Nigerian curriculum, knowledge of artificial intelligence and digital skills. The effect on English, the main outcome of interest, was of 0.23 standard deviations. Cost-effectiveness analysis revealed substantial learning gains, equating to 1.5 to 2 years of ’business-as-usual’ schooling, situating the intervention among some of the most cost-effective programs to improve learning outcomes.

i’ve noticed there’s a gap between how excited SWEs and data people are about AI. not sure what explains it. poor experiences with text-to-sql tools? concerns about being replaced?

very funny reddit post every comment is “we use Snowflake for SQL and Databricks for ML” and then half the replies are “you don’t need Databricks for that,” and the other half are “you don’t need Snowflake for that”

you hear a lot of people compare the AI labs to cloud providers like “openai is the next aws” but i wonder if the cloud data warehouses are a better comparison is openai actually just the next snowflake?

one thing i’m interested in is: who is responsible for deploying (internal) AI agents/apps at companies? it feels to me like it should be the data team, at least at smaller companies without a traditional IT org. but i’m not sure how often it is. who’s in charge of it (if anyone) for your company?

Last night’s article in the Washington Post about D.C. police responding to a 911 call by illegally letting DOGE onto private property is unlike any news story I have ever read. Every single person should read this article and think about where our society is going.

earlier this week, OpenAI announced two new “agentic” tools: the Responses API and the Agents SDK i’ll skip “what are they?” because you’ve probably seen (if not, see the link below). but why are they important? (spoiler: it’s not *just* because agents are all the rage right now)

interesting post with a non-hypey perspective on LLMs and AGI. imo most of the AGI hype is just marketing for the big labs (and their secondary rounds) but looking past the hype doesn’t have to mean thinking they’re not useful! www.lesswrong.com/posts/oKAFFv...
