Socialism isn't even realistically on the ballots though is it, whether GOP or Dem?

Any such in/out referendum isn't happening. Needs consistent polling at >67% for likely rejoin terms before feasible from both UK and EU sides. Focus should be on incremental closer ties and time to demonstrate each closer step was good. Long road back is the only one that has a chance of lasting.

The technology to cut the scams exists within Alphabet, yet Alphabet is willing to make money off the back of scammers. And their invocation of "trust" and "safety" is a pretense. Evil!

YouTube allows ads that are clearly scams. Google's Trust & Safety Team reviews complaints against these ads and denies the complaints. Gemini identifies these ads as indeed scams and explains Google's Trust & Safety Team's denials are bogus. Alphabet owns YouTube, Google and Gemini. Bonkers!

But it's not a road, the metaphor breaks down. I think the LibDem spokesman has it the right way - explore ways of deepening the relationship and see what flourishes. There is no road to predefined destination in Canada's latest moves.

AFAIK Christopher Harborne hasn't even bothered to return to live in UK - he's just registered a residence address in UK for electoral purposes & under the laws as currently written there is no min # of days required for him to actually live there. UK Government weak, weak, weak!

Level the playing field? Yes, state-funding for political parties. Keep unions and rich individuals from undue influence for the price of annual coffeeshop coffee per person. More fool the centrist politicians who haven't advocated this already. More fool the voters for allowing vested interests.

UK press should keep getting all over this. Ben Delo is a convicted felon. That he was pardoned by Trump doesn't magically make him not a convicted felon. That he was pardoned by a convicted felon makes his pardon morally vacuous. Also another £4m = party of corporate, rich-man interests.

Not a comment of your first sentence, but your 2nd and 3rd are highly selective: e.g. April 2, 2007 New Century Financial Corporation filed for ch11 bankruptcy in USA. 3,200 Ees fired. In 2006, the company was second only to HSBC Finance in issuing USA subprime mortgages.

Do you really think people expect taxing billionaires will solve all government financing issues? I don't. So do the tax things Dan says will make the biggest difference to raise money.... AND ...tax billionaires, if only to (a) take a positive moral position, and (b) dampen popular resentment.

@stephenkb.bsky.social where are you sourcing this from?

mji29 @mji29.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Right. I think what I stated are facts. There are reasons and interpretations that can be put to those facts. One interpretation might be that USA has privileged low taxation. This has been GOP-led since Reagan, and Dems followed them despite earlier protestations. Covid didn't help.

In November 1999, Donald Trump proposed a one-time, 14.25% "net-worth tax" on wealthy Americans (>$10m net worth) to completely wipe out the U.S. national debt.

000
mji29 @mji29.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Maybe that's fair. Biden is more down to covid than GOP? Rather than austerity, I'd want to look more to the long-term bipartisan willingness to privilege low tax.

mji29 @mji29.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Donald Trump is responsible for 29% of the total U.S. national debt; Joe Biden 21%; Obama 23%. This is a structural issue. It is fair to say GOP are not especially financially responsible vs Dems. But National Debt is on USA as a whole, not just one half.

Yes, Reform UK still has a board structure favouring the leader, but what influence over its subsidiary does 50:50 owned holdco have to upset the balance of power in Reform UK? I'm not sure it is critical except doesn't it mean that ZY is now firmly entrenched within Reform even if not at NF status?
000
mji29 @mji29.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
How does the 50:50 limited by guarantee structure of the new Reform holding co affect the balance of power between NF and ZY? - they each have 50% in the holdco to my understanding.

How do they get from here to there? New leader required - not happening before a General Election? Don't see Reform/Restore voters returning in volume - but why vote Tory vs Lib Dem if 'only Tories can beat Labour' is no longer true?

It's a crazy line. He was the majority shareholder - all Reform's candidates and workers were ultimately under his direction. Zia Yusuf currently serves as the home affairs spokesperson for Reform UK but is not elected as an MP nor a candidate in any election. He is certainly a politician though.

If he's successful, isn't that a spectacular return for him? 5% wealth tax would give a 3/5th of a year payback period. If you meant 1% wealth tax, it's still good investment at 3-year payback
