Medievalism/Vikingism in the blood bank: a Viking in the red and white Danish national colours attempts to recruit more volunteer plasma donors. Note the military terminology: “oprustning” means “(re)armament” Added argument on this postcard: Right now, we have to buy US plasma. Fascinating times.
A stereotypical Viking garbed in red and white imitates Kitchener by pointing at the viewer and encouraging them to donate plasma.A postcard warning that Denmark has to buy plasma from the US

So, one of the many things that sucks about academic job applications back when there were jobs to apply for was that to write a good letter you needed to let yourself fall just a little bit in love with the dream of the job and the place... and then you don't get it and the ideas are abandoned.

Of course it's hard to read! You wandered into a debate where the strangers all know each other and are arguing! You have to listen and figure out what they're discussing and what the stakes are and who these people and places and things and ideas are and how the relate! So you look them up.

This is so, so good
I have to be blunt here: Our critics are really fucking stupid, and we’ve given them way too much leeway to conjure senile fantasies out of their own illiteracy. We need to stop taking their trolling in good faith, and we need to stop apologizing for our work. The truth is that every purportedly obvious problem with humanities writing—every bogeyman of bias, difficulty, obscurity, and irrelevance—dissolves into something else, something much more interesting, as soon as we wade into the spaces where the scholarship exists.

excellent! spread the word! we're hoping to do a series on the crusades later this year. But i was keen to lead in with this one, as i think any study of the Crusader States highlights just how different things were at that time in that area to the modern, western cultural image of that.

'What’s the value of a History PhD? A view from business' bit.ly/4elv1cW In this new post, Richard Marks charts the skills gained from completing a doctorate. From project design & management to data retrieval & analysis, History PhDs bring capacity and experience that are in demand #Skystorians
Opening page of RHS blog post: 'What’s the value of a History PhD? A view from business'. Full abstract:

"In this post we hear from Dr Richard Marks, a former business analyst who, having completed a PhD in 2024, now works as an independent historical researcher and author. After a long career outside education, Richard’s experience both of business and PhD research means he’s well placed to identify the broader skills History PhDs acquire while designing and studying for a doctorate. In creating and completing a PhD, you’re gaining capacity in project design and management, data retrieval and analysis, as well as engagement with varied audiences. Such skills are central to professions beyond higher education and highly valued by employers. Richard was one of 25 researchers who attended a recent workshop for independent historians, organised by the Royal Historical Society and held at the University of Warwick in May 2026."
