I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since The Ivalice Chronicles released. It’s an absolutely remarkable version of the game. I loved it so much it inspired me to finally write a book on FF Tactics. Due for release next year.

Two very common themes in ancient mythology are that male gods conspire to overthrow their fathers, and supreme deities typically sire multiple illegitimate sons. A blend of this is seen in Final Fantasy VII's Rufus, Lazard, and Evan, with the former two actively working against President Shinra.

The original Final Fantasy VII has impacted my life more than any other piece of media. But Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the best game I’ve ever played. I cannot wait for Revelation!

In Norse mythology, Odin is a master of sorcery, but he learned the art of witchcraft and seidr (glimpsing the future) from the goddess Freyja. The FFXVI LOGOS book confirms that Barnabas’ mother - who of course raised the Dominant of Odin - is similarly named Freyja. #FinalFantasymythology

The links between OG FFVII’s Nibelheim and Norse mythology can be seen with the Odin Materia, the Rune Blade, and its name (based on Niflheimr). Remake continued the trend by including characters from an old runic alphabet on the outfit of Tifa, herself born in Nibelheim.

Historic beliefs of the Phoenix say it will be reborn from its ashes upon death. However, earlier versions of the myth had a chick replace its parent. Both versions are embodied by Joshua in FFXVI, who comes from a long line of Phoenix Dominants and is himself “resurrected”.

In Final Fantasy Tactics, Ramza encounters the demon Belias, associated with the Aries (Ram) Stone and who calls himself the Devil. ‘Belias/Belial’ is a term used in the Hebrew Bible to mean ‘wickedness’, which Christians personify as Satan - who is said to have ram’s horns.

In Greek mythology, the war goddess Athena is born from Zeus’ forehead, wearing full armor and a helmet, and wielding a spear and shield. Her Roman equivalent is Minerva, which explains why during Zack's fight with Minerva in Crisis Core, she's equipped with similar items to newborn Athena.

The Final Fantasy series is no stranger to referencing ancient Greek and Roman myths. FFXVI leans into this with aspects of Clive's leadership, liberation, and even alcohol, paralleling tales of the god Dionysus/Bacchus. My book 'MYTHOS' explores this and more. Details below.

In the legends of King Arthur, his knights gather at the Round Table at Camelot. Arthur is also associated with Avalon, a mystical island of fruit trees, where he’s said to be entombed. This is why Final Fantasy VII’s Knights of the Round materia is found on the forested Round Island, hidden at sea.

Lich, the Fiend of Earth in FF1, is an undead sorcerer based on creatures from D&D. Such wizards become immortal by hiding their soul in secret objects. This derives from Slavic folklore, most famously from Koschei the Deathless - depicted as a robed, skeletal villain capable of decaying the land.

In Roman myth, Vulcan is God of the Forge, capable of creating extraordinary weapons for deities and heroes alike. In FFVII Rebirth, Barret and Dyne both wield guns attached to special adaptors on their arms. The weapon found immediately prior to their duel is the Vulcan Cannon.

In Norse mythology, Nidhögg is a dragon who lives in the main spring of Niflheim, responsible for punishing the spirits of murderers. Nibelheim’s inn in FFVII Rebirth - located by the water tower - is called the Nidhogg Hotel, where Sephiroth stays before slaying the townsfolk.

One of Final Fantasy Tactics' main influences (as stated by creator Yasumi Matsuno) was the 1980 novel 'The Name of the Rose', whose story is set at a remote abbey in 14th century Italy. There, a series of bizarre deaths occur and the protagonists investigate a labyrinthine library containing… [1/3]

Minotaurs are a bovine race of beastmen in Final Fantasy XVI, with named figures such as Asterios, the white-furred brute who is fought at the Sagespire. In Greek myth, there is only one Minotaur - his real name is Asterion/Asterios and he was fathered by a sacred white bull.

In Roman myth, dead spirits wishing to be reincarnated had to drink from Lethe, the river of oblivion, which erased the soul's memories of its past life. In FFVII, the Lifestream is the great current of past and future memories, which recycles spirit energy to form new life. #FinalFantasymythology

The Final Fantasy series has always been richly inspired by mythology and religious traditions. This very much includes Final Fantasy VII. I've written books dedicated to exploring this, such as how Greek legends influenced the Compilation. Check out the details at the links below.

In Final Fantasy XVI, Torgal is revealed to be a descended from Fenrir. His level 7-9 pedigrees are 'Leyding-looser', 'Dromi-striker', and 'Gleipnir-cutter', respectively. These are named after the 3 chains used by the gods to fetter the giant wolf Fenrir in Norse mythology.
