You’ve asked me to accept — because dictionaries and grammar should be descriptive, not prescriptive — that “literally” can mean “figuratively.” I’m not over it. And now “on accident” is acceptable? And “20$”? (I am perfectly fine with the singular “they,” however.)

What a stunning work this is. (Don’t skip the acknowledgments!) It fascinates me how modern audiences (myself included) consume historical racial trauma when it’s suffused with the supernatural (see Sinners, the works of Tananarive Due) — in ways I hope are deeper than mere entertainment. #booksky

This is priceless. Check out how local news is reporting on Sen Eric Schmidt’s clown-show grilling of Jack Smith. They found Jack Smith at the game… “Top corner, section 109, row 1. In fact, that seat doesn’t even exist in Atlanta.”

We are all Charlie Gordon. Reread something from childhood or adolescence. Like Charlie on his post-surgery Rorschach, you’ll insist that this couldn’t possibly be the same text you encountered before maturity and loss of innocence! At least, that’s how I remember “Flowers for Algernon”…. #booksky

It’s interesting how deep branding gets into your psyche. The other day I wondered why my eight-year-old niece was interested in Pulp Fiction. Turns out there was only a surface similarity of shapes and colors.

I encountered this bit of chiasmus two times in less than a week: IT’S BETTER TO HAVE IT AND NOT NEED THAN TO NEED IT AND NOT HAVE IT. Rhetorically nifty…but used in reference to a Glock and an OxyContin script. Thoughts?

“They’re still fighting out the exact wording.” …

“What words are they fighting over, and which side wants which words?” Avasarala demanded.

“I don’t know. Does it matter?”

Of course it mattered. The difference between The UN has been negotiating in bad faith and The UN was negotiating in bad faith could be measured in hundreds of lives. Thousands. Avasarala tried to swallow her impatience. It didn’t come naturally. “All right,” she said. “See if there’s anything else you can get me.”
