Always find Nobel Prize season so blah, like why can't they just give Fields Medals like a real domain of human achievement

sitting on loads of counterexamples to major conjectures but honestly I'm not in it for the glory, might leak via various channels that won't be traceable back to me just in case other people would find the results useful

before you say "not every living Fields medalist signed this" let me just ask: - did I claim they had? - you call that living?

[Fields medal, very old man] the Fields medal of course unlikely to be awarded for much longer, so it's a very limited pool

[Fields medal, very old man] RE: mathstodon.xyz/@mjb/117250484261322… both the youngest ever and oldest ever Fields medalist, the latter of course being the much more impressive achievement. hard to imagine anyone holding an international mathematical medal for longer.

Great time to recall that Navier-Stokes is not a real mathematician but rather a mythical apparition invented* to scare fluid dynamics students into studying more. 🌊👹 * discovered

RE: mathstodon.xyz/@tao/117237321472650… the "difficulty landscape" point is really important; mathematicians have long recognised that finding and formulating problems with the right difficulty is one of the hardest and most essential tasks in both teaching and research, and […]

For anyone not following the drama, there's been apparently a big development in ai math, along with some accusations of very bad behavior by OpenAI. But we don't have details yet. If I understand it, Buckmaster and Levent Alpoge made a big discovery on Navier-Stokes. Events go something like this:

@jesusmargar likewise I assume the authors don't want to distract from the content by putting their own names on it at this point, but I can say they are all mathematicians I absolutely trust to conduct this responsibly.

@jesusmargar I assume the authors are waiting until there is a critical mass of signatures before publishing them, given the sensitivities that might be involved in sticking one's neck out before there is strength in numbers
