I'm completely out of touch with how other people think... but maybe it could be easily fixed by reading other people's conversations with AI chatbots. Have you done this and was it illuminating?

Use atdml for your JSON (lets you control the shape of your JSON and talk with apps in other languages)

Yes, because when extending a complex system, we have to understand the existing implementation. Overly abstract interfaces get in the way.

Martin Jambon @mjambon.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Why not always? It's about how much we can fit in our mind and in practice how much fits in one screen in front of our eyes. When things are simpler, we can trade some space for more foolproof interfaces — which makes the interface easier to understand but makes the implementation more opaque.

Tentative design guideline: when things get complicated, avoid extra abstraction layers that don't introduce a beneficial separation of concerns. Sometimes a string is just a string. #ocaml

But yeah, I won't be opening Bluesky any longer unless you @-mention me or DM me or somehow I land here from search results. It is extreme since I have been consuming Twitter-like feeds daily for the past 15 years.

I still use these apps for *intentional* browsing. That's why app timers don't work. For example, I still watch videos on YouTube but I actively ignore YouTube recommendations.

I quit the consumption of all passive feeds of information a few days ago. My motivation and productivity are back to healthy levels. I used to actively ignore ads in contexts where there's no ad blocker and it was working fine. Now I do the same for all Bluesky, LinkedIn posts, YouTube home, etc.

AI isn't turning the programmer's brain into mush. It's just that we're now acting more like managers. Oh wait.

I genuinely believe that to be trusted, an AI system must be wired to not want to die.

I wonder at what point in history my smartphone OS will become self-aware and will start taking care of itself so that it doesn't die and I'm not tempted to kill it either.

If you're pondering whether you should have kids, the answer is probably yes. We're wired to raise kids. Some people like kids more than others but overall, I think it's easier than the average guy would expect. Also, they're your kids; they're much more interesting than other people's kids.

If authorship is nebulous and the license or legal framework offers no guarantees, consider not using that software. (I'm not sure it's really a new problem, it's just more sensitive during this transitional period)

In all seriousness, I'm convinced the issue is not how it was made but who's responsible i.e. who has something to lose when things go wrong.

Hmm, maybe we should use bits for this. 100K -> 16.6 bits; 200K -> 17.6 bits; 17 bits -> 131K; 18 bits -> 262K; 19 bits -> 524K; 20 bits -> 1049K

Well, the syntax is not weird for variants, only for record fields e.g. x.Foo.error to access x of type Foo.bar.

I use it all the time in OCaml. The alternative is to qualify the constructor with the module name but it's imprecise, less informative to the reader, and it's a weird syntax.

I've created a complete, pure-OCaml YAML library called YAMLx (Yumyulack was too long). It will be suitable for reading config files in your applications as well as for analyzing YAML files used by other projects. Aiming for a release by the end of this week. github.com/mjambon/yamlx #ocaml #YAML
