So much time and energy goes into dealing with glitter. Much like in crafting glitter is the perfect sparkly nuisance, so too emails in professional life.

when you unexpectedly open a greeting card, or you reach into your kid's backpack, and .... Surprise! Glitter! Glitter from the art or a card is now all over your floor. You didn't ask for that glitter! You weren't planning on SO.MUCH.GLITTER. But now, here it is. And you have to deal with it.

Yet another act of anticipatory obedience. The '27 budget is a *request* from the president. Congress can appropriate more $ to NSF (including SBE) if it wants. In fact... a bipartisan majority JUST rebuked POTUS' deep cuts to science funding a couple months ago! This is only over if we let it.

This is a cataclysm for social science in the United States. SBE helped to foster the field of Science and Technology Studies in the country (it supported the development of #STS training programs at UCSD and my alma mater, Cornell, in the 1990s). Unfortunately, Vannevar Bush would love this part.

Nearly all collaborator challenges I have had stem from some diverging norm about academic work, methods, or personal individual process/work habits. And this compact forces that conversation. I swear by ‘em. I think I have a list of questions that make up the compact. Email me if curious to see it!

Just like I try to do “compacts” — a collection of norm setting for collaboration questions we talk about — with my student workers, I’m also moving towards this with peers/other faculty collaborators.
