Slugabed [SLUG-uh-bed] (n.) - One who lingers in bed through laziness, a sluggard. Used in a sentence: “Up at last rose the slugabed, with hair all afflunters and the unsteady indignity of a corpse newly exhumed, grumbling that only villains wake before noon.”

A “Grandiloquent Word of the Day” card featuring the word SLUGABED with its pronunciation and definition (“one who lingers in bed through laziness; a sluggard”), alongside a black-and-white sketch of a person sitting up in bed near a window, wrapped in rumpled blankets, looking weary and disheveled.

Reminder, this comes out in the US on Oct 30th. All proceeds go to UNHCR to help refugees (I see no money from it at any point): amzn.to/3Ft485J (This is an Amazon link. Please buy it if you can from a local independent bookshop. www.indiebound.org)

Neil Gaiman @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com & Chuck Wendig @chuckwendig.bsky.social hope folks will “don their pre-order hats” for Neil’s poetry for kids: What You Need To Be Warm. Proceeds go to UNHCR Goodwill. Chuck suggests buying from an independent bookstore > www.harpercollins.com/products/wha...

I just read an article on how @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com and Terry Pratchett wrote Good Omens, and it is as delightful as reading the book. I am so glad the two met and collaborated. I love everything about the book and the series.

How did we get to the possibility of Jim Jordan as speaker? As a country, we should be shamed.

Getting the Danny Trejo's taco cookbook and watching The Bear results in some damn good brisket bowls.

Just finished Holly by Stephen King. I couldn't put this one down! No slow parts in this story.

Someone said the Georgia trial starting on October 23, 2023 should be called the Chese and Kraken trial, and I can’t stop thinking about it.

We met Harvey today and he was super nice! Very sweet guy. He spent about ten minutes talking to the little girl on line in front of us.

AQUAMAN 42 COVER by NICK CARDY. This cover stopped 9-year-old Karl cold when he saw it on the stands. So powerful! So unlike anything else out there! (So 60s!) This was a time when Cardy (under Infantino's guidance) did some of the best covers out there. I'll share more in the days to come…

I'm about halfway through Galilee by Clive Barker, and I am really enjoying it. Started slow but is really getting hard to put down. Two more Barker books to go until I've read them all.

People said we were being alarmist when we said extremist Christian nationalists would use the abortion laws to target women trying to escape Texas to receive an abortion.

A map of Texas counties and highways targeted by antiabortion ordinances. Counties highlighted in orange are where ordinances have passed. Counties highlighted in yellow are of interest for trafficking proposals. Please note that these ordinances have passed as of Aug. 30. Original photo by The Washington Post.
