In thinking about my new book, Finishing Faithfully, which will release May 1, 2027, what podcasts do you think would be a great match?

Let's think about this deeply, especially when it comes to politics and theology.

Older adults are not immune from the chaos in today's world. Don't let it shape you into a revengeful or bitter person. Be humble. Be kind. Be grateful.

Honest question from an 84 yr-old friend: “Why are some of the Christians who mocked us for being afraid during the pandemic the same ones who are intentionally stirring up fear in Christians today?”

Give an example of a "gift of time" that has been especially meaningful to you. Or tell about a “gift of time” you would love to receive.

Went out for lunch today. As with many restaurants, the rolled-up napkin was secured with a sticky paper. My husband and I often exchanged “rings” with these, laughing and talking over lunch. He’s been gone for over three years, but sometimes little moments surprise you. It’s just the way of grief.

As Christians, we should never become numb to cruelty and corruption. We should not close our eyes to it or say it’s OK because we are just working toward a greater good. Jesus has shown us a better, more faithful way. It’s that simple and that hard.

Every fall, I bring out my mother’s old mink stole and display it with a hand-turned wooden bowl filled with dried hydrangeas. Simple beauty, sweet memories.

If you wake up thinking about your next political or theological “gotcha” headline, meme, video, post or podcast, it’s time to step away from technology and just sit with God.

If you had an inkling that one of your long-held beliefs was based on an untruth, what would you do? Spiritual growth at any age requires honest self reflection, and self reflection takes time, intentionality and vulnerability. Be brave. Dig deep. Age faithfully.

I have come to believe that the reason some big name Christians and podcast hosts are so busy creating new content is because if they slow down, they might have time to reflect on who they have become.

We should remember this bit of wisdom and invite other people’s stories, especially those who hold different opinions, because their experiences are different than ours.

I’m writing about Advent right now. When I stopped at lunch to check social media, I was appalled at the surge of Christians using slurs and misrepresentations regarding political candidates. Please, let’s take a collective breath. We should be showing the world a better way.

In early October each year, my church hosts a “costume giveaway” for families in the community. For those of us who are older, it’s fun to buy princess dresses, astronaut gear and pumpkin costumes for those who need a little help. It will be an afternoon of games and food, too.

“In a culture built on instant reactions & short attention spans, we are often quicker to respond than to understand. But real depth- true connection- demands more of us. It asks for listening beyond words. It requires slowing down…holding space for the complexity of others.” Barbara Vercruysse

“Divisiveness thrives on the superficial. It thrives when we trade understanding for judgment and presence for performance. When we choose conflict over curiosity, we flatten one another into caricatures. But when kindness enters the room, depth returns.” Barbara Vercruysse

Just had lunch with my brother and sister to celebrate my brother’s 77th birthday. I am grateful to have a loving relationship with both of them and to be living closer to them. As we age, encouraging and supporting one another becomes even more important.

None of us arrive at late life without scars from broken relationships. You may have been deeply wounded by betrayal or neglect. Maybe a longtime friend ghosted you as if you don’t exist. You can reclaim your narrative. Keep your eyes on Christ. Let your final chapters reflect love and grace.

It shouldn’t be that we wait until an injustice happens to us before we are willing to take action against oppression. Christ calls us to look beyond ourselves everyday. It’s called spiritual formation.

One older woman explained that she came to a point in life where she wasn't satisfied with easy, fill-in-the-blank answers from childhood Sunday school lessons. Be willing to dig deep, even if the answer remains a mystery!
