This could be you.
The poster for David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch, with the tagline 'Exterminate all rational thought.' A tilted typewriter sits where a man's face should be, topped with a fedora; the man's torso wears a suit and his fingers are approaching the typewriter's keys.

An ad with Chris Cuomo's head photoshopped to a more ripped guy's body, or maybe an AI image of Chris Cuomo as a ripped guy (it only kind looks like him). It's an ad for Gym In a Box: Elite Body Activation. The ad copy reads, in part:

CHRIS CUOMO
Strong. Fit. Activated.

FULL BODY
IN 15 MINUTES
Burn Fat. Not Muscle.

I got the three-volume Vintage Russian Library trade paperbacks a few months ago on ebay for $20. The first volume is held together by tape. It was totally worth it. I have not moved house since then so all my books weigh nothing as far as I'm concerned.
A photograph of the three part biography of Trotsky by Isaac Deutscher. From left to right: The Prophet Armed, showing a photograph of a young Trotsky; The Prophet Unarmed, showing a red tinted medium shot of an older Trotsky; and The Prophet Outcase, showing a photograph of a still older Trotsky.

That might be the intention but it feels like it's derived from this image.

Not sure if you feel about the Eagles the way you do about the Phillies, but if so this might ruin your day.

Maybe it was when the head terrorist discovered one of his social-justice-warrior acolytes was gay, and subsequently kicked him off a building.

I haven't read this book so I can't evaluate this review on the merits, but these are ... not two parentheticals you want to exist in the same paragraph. 'It's obviously Afghanistan, but maybe KSA, and the author didn't know enough about the cultures I acknowledge he isn't deliberately describing.'
A Drop of Corruption could replace Khanum with the USA and Yarrow with Afghanistan and you'd not see any difference in the politics (and I don't mean that in a good way. It's clear to me that Bennett did not intend this comparison).Afghanistan, sorry, the narco state of Yarrow, is an autocracy with an aristocracy as the ruling class (I suppose you could actually suggest this is a metaphor for Saudi Arabia and given the writer's geographical location one can forgive them for not being able to distinguish between the two. If I was being charitable I'd say he'd mushed them together rather than didn't know the difference in social structures and regional cultures).

Fortunately this - the most alarming of the charges levied against the Mamdani administration - turned out to be inaccurate.
Corrected on Sept. 4, 2026: And earlier version of this article referred imprecisely to a post by Matt Stoller about the Mamdani administration's cancellation of a contract with McKinsey, suggesting he was among a group of influencers being fed messaging to boost the mayor's image. Mr. Stoller was not on a list of Signal chat recipients who received outreach from the mayor's office on the cancellation of the contract.

Mattress Firm seeing this post.
A screenshot from Punch-Drunk Love. Philip Seymour Hoffman, with blonde, shoulder-length hair and wearing a blue blazer over an off-white oxford with no tie, holds a phone and raises a finger while his face contorts and reddens. He is standing in front of a store window at night. He is yelling 'SHUT UP' over and over again.

Read theory:
The cover of 'Dengue Boy: A Novel' by Michel Nieva, translated by Rahul Bery. It has a red border, and then a black border resembling rocks. The word 'dengue' is in yellow and stylized so that the gaps in letters resemble bacteria; the 'boy,' also in yellow, is stylized to resemble dripping fluids. A stylized mosquito with human-like arms and legs is pictured in red, green, and purple against a black background.

An illustration of the suicide of Francois Vatel by Edouard Zier. It shows a large, white-haired man in 18th century common garb with an apron falling from his waist, about to pierce his belly with a sword. The common account of Vatel's suicide is that it was caused by a delivery of fish so delayed that he could not prepare the feast he had devised for Louis XIV.

When she retired they said she was very nice to them just out of view to the cameras so I think the dynamic is more like this.
A still from a Looney Tunes cartoon depicting Ralph the Wolf and Sam the Sheepdog. Ralph the Wolf is punching in for his shift and Sam is waiting to punch in for his. Once they're both on the clock they will be in opposition until the time comes to punch out.

A panel from an SMBC comic. The setting is a tunnel in Hell. Facing away from our perspective, an Angel reaches out his arm and cries out 'Quick! Give your soul to me!' The man he is crying out to, a bald and shirtless laborer holding a pickaxe, is smiling and saying 'Oh no, I'm not falling for that one again!'

Dog-sitting for friends and found this on their shelves.
The Mass Market Paperback cover for The Origin of the Brunists by Robert Coover. One a white background, on the left side a figure in a white coat faces what appears to be a pyramid stacked of coal topped with a white bird against a blue raincloud. To the right the copy reads 'A startling novel about the final day by the bestelling author of The Public Burning' and then the title and author

RETVRN (to your college days): The magnificent flambeaux
A somewhat blurry shot of the flambeaux holders in a Mardi Gras parade. In the foreground a man with a bandanna over his face, a white coat, camo shorts and a necklace of oversized Mardi Gras beads holds a flambeaux (a pole and board with two flames attached) in a hip holster. Behind him other holders in more traditional royal purple can be seen.
