Westwood Pizza has been on my dining to-do list for years. We tried to come once, but were put off by the queue. Last night, after the launch party of 5Eliza—soon to be a black box 200-seat theatre, restaurant and artist studios—we walked straight into a street-side table. #food

Crisp skinned Murray cod cuddles up with spring vegetables in a pale lemon lake of fennel beurre blanc. It feels almost retro, but that’s part of the charm at Farmhouse King Cross. It’s a quiet achiever in the formerly notorious suburb, opening back in 2013 by Mike Mu Sung and Tristan Rosier. #food

The staff at Sunny Seafood Restaurant went the extra kilometre to ensure we wanted for nothing. This is particularly important in a half-full yum cha sitting, where trolleys are less frequent. The floor team moved seamlessly between menu-based ordering and trolley service. #food

Half the menu was unavailable on the night we visited Duan Noodle House. This was curious, because it was early on the tumultuous wet Saturday night of the October Long Weekend. We tried ordering XO pipis to be told there was no seafood. We tried to order Chinese roast duck… #food

The air is redolent with spices with the open kitchen giving us an olfactory introduction into what is to come. We’re at the former home of No. 5 Restaurant. The industrial Alexandria setting has been given a slight Pasifikan makeover to add more greenery and emerged as The Spice Plantation. #food

The chance to eat Sydney rock oysters from three different South Coast growers side-by-side lured me to the Doom Juice Cellar Door in Marrickville. What made me stay however, was the friendly welcome from the bar staff AND really liking the 2025 Doom Juice Weiss ($13/glass). #food

Flying Australian, New Zealander & Turkish flags, Coastal Kebabs & Cafe, draws upon the mutual respect forged between our countries in the trenches of the 1915 Gallipoli campaign. Fittingly, they’re serving Turkish kebab ($15), with thin slices of caramelised spiced beef shaved… #food

While Golden Tree Bistro is not the first Sydney restaurant to present Guizhou cuisine, it’s the first one I’ve been to. The cuisine is known for being sour and spicy, with both evident in the Guizhou pickled chilli egg fried rice ($16.80) that arrived as our first dish. #food

Issan-style duck larb—larb ped benja crisp ($28)—at Krung is killer. It’s punish you hot, but offers so much flavour & texture using duck skin, makrut lime leaves, garlic, chilli and shallots, it’s hard to stop eating. We’ve parted the thick velvet curtains to dine in Sydney’s newest Thai bar. #food

A strong flat white ($7.37) made on Single Origin’s Yeehaw at RÜH’s Lower Crown outpost threw liquorice, though its tasting notes suggest raisin. Whether that’s the coffee, how it was roasted or made, is harder to pinpoint. What is on the cafe is that it arrived halfway through my breakfast. #food

Street-level in 25Hours Hotel, The Olympia, you’ll find The Palomar. It’s also an overseas import. The London original by the same name is known for its smashed cucumbers in green tahini & crispy chilli oil. It’s made the trip too, & it’s good, in a weird sugary-almonds-meets-chilli-oil way. #food

Reacquaint yourself with al fresco at Monica, the rooftop bar crowning 25hours Hotel, The Olympia. It’s on the site of the former nightclub, Grand Pacific Blue Room. The well-appointed indoor-outdoor bar offers district views from CBD to Eastern Suburbs with St Vincent’s at the centre. #food

Living in a political age dominated by nostalgic whining for a misremembered past, Richard Glover was a balm last night at Feast. Hosted by author Jennifer Wong, the Sydney Fringe show ($79/person) packed out the Hurstville Entertainment Centre. Glover reminded us 1960s & 70s food wasn’t amazing.

My favourite coffee roaster, The Golden Cobra, has sold the business. Their dark roast blend, My Brother’s Wife, has been a staple in our home since 2010. In the market for a replacement, I found myself at Marrickville’s Double Roasters. The converted warehouse houses both roastery and cafe. #food

The Metro has opened up the North Shore for diners who like a drink. Last night, BYO in hand, we took a fast train to Chatswood for a back alley beef specialist. Belying the service lane location, Lady Chai is well-appointed with set-like decor that recreates a Beijing-style laneway. #food

Food at The Rice Den felt more uptight & restrained than I remembered from my first trip to St Leonards 3 years earlier. It may be the restaurant responding to the occasion—a wine dinner ($188/head) with Domenica winemaker, Peter Graham—which drew a conservative bunch of wine collectors. #food

Day-to-night Newtown venue, Nest Newtown, eats like dining at a mate’s place, well, if your mate was a decent home cook. There are candles in beer bottles, bare bulbs, pressed tin ceilings and blistering walls, their impact softened by a whimsical mural. #food

With Sydney’s ever-rising rents inclining restaurants to make safer choices, it was a pleasure to eat something more experimental down in Wollongong. Roy’s Restobar served us a skewer of octopus and Jerusalem artichoke slices ($22) with a house-made green chilli sauce and almond crème. #food

You’ll find shawarma all over Sydney, but the best version I’ve had to date is found in a BP petrol station in Moorebank. Al Jabal ain’t fancy, but their healthy plate ($26) lays enough beef shawarma for two over a mound of rice, lashes it with your favourite sauces (garlic and hot chilli)… #food
