Sorry, my "Course Document." Almost forgot the term "syllabus" had been co-opted by the state legislature. :-/

I think the first line of my syllabus next semester will just be "My goal this semester is to frustrate you..."

I live for the "Interesting.... tell me more about that..." At its best times, it draws something out of the student that leads to deeper discussion. At its worst, it gives me time to mentally scramble to figure out how to get things back on track. >.<

I didn't remember/never realized you were a Keenspotter backinnaday. And I *READ* you backinnaday. :-D

Oh, god... I hadn't thought of it this way. This is bad-faith "Debate me, Bro" methods applied to scholarship. >.<

In fairness, there's LOTS of things I do instead of grading. (QFT from someone who is, at this moment, commenting on this post to avoid grading. :-D )

Guy was at a roadhouse and ordered a burger with a Coke and a side of BBQ sauce. The waitress winced and said "All we have is Pepsi." Guy sighed and said "Fine." The waitress came back a few minutes later and said "All right! Burger, a coke, and a side of Pepsi!"

My wife and I have followed the tradition of reading it aloud, one chapter per day in the month of October, for *years,* and this year Mixie wanted in on the tradition.

This is your annual reminder that Roger Zelazny's "A Night in the Lonesome October" is a fantastic little book. A little spooky, more than a touch macabre, and a great atmospheric read.

This. This is the good work the world needs right now. Both the raising sheep and the sharing pictures of them before they are raised. :-D

I mean, he could have just used electricity. It didn't come up much, but electrification was well underway in the UK by the time of the Holmes stories. It's even mentioned in "Hound of the Baskervilles."

Is this just another "Ok, Boomer" thing, where everyone from 40-140 is "your parents?"
010
MishaOutLoud @mishaoutloud.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I'm just wondering who the "you" in "your parents" is supposed to be. I don't have kids, but my nieces and nephews range in age from 18 to 28 -- so, like... presumably the "new generation" this article is speaking to? In 1983, I was 7. The parents of those nieces and nephews were between 4 and 9.

I was so VERY tempted to respond to this with "Okay, Boomer." :-D

(I was tempted to say "basic frequency analysis and cryptography," but then I thought "Oh, and Vigenere and the Kasiski attack." And I then I thought "Oh! And Modular arithmetic and RSA!" And then I realized I just want to teach my codebreaking course in a bar. :-D )

A whirlwind history of the technology of writing, probably from Mesopotamia to the introduction of paper to Europe. Bonus points if I can bring the Playdough and construction paper. :-D

Walked into my office and smelled Acetone. Which made NO sense... I haven't been doing anything with acetone. Anyway, apparently that was NOT the correct charger for my beard trimmer, and now I know what gently melting plastic smells like.

I consider it a mark of cultural decline and decadence that this is something that *needs* to be on a bumper sticker. Announcing cows is * BASIC CIVILITY*, like returning shopping carts. :-D

(Also, I just checked, and I have a half-dozen original disks that came with the ][c: LOGO, AppleBasic, and a handful of others. Let me know if there are any you are lacking.)

MishaOutLoud @mishaoutloud.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Whelp... the Apple ][c just booted up, and several of the floppies I tested work fine. Just need to troubleshoot the flickering/rolling video, but I think that's a bad RCA cable ($5 fix). If it's NOT the RCA cable... hooboy... then it's a hair-raising adventure in Soldering Iron Town. >.<

NIIIIICCCCE! I'm still cleaning my ][C, but the last time I booted it "Project: Space Station" at least loaded (didn't try to play). I suspect there will be less exploration involved in my process, though. All of those old disks were MINE. :-D

(My Cat(tm) and Not My Cat(tm) capitalized in recognition of a long-standing game my wife and I play called "Not My Cat." We text each other pictures of gray-and-black striped cats and have to guess if it's My Cat or Not My Cat.)

Merica loves: my porch, cold weather, and ignoring her actual owner when she calls for her. Merica hates: loud noises, shoes, being told to go home.

MishaOutLoud @mishaoutloud.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
This is Merica. Merica is Not My Cat. She only looks like My Cat because she is My Cat’s daughter. It is uncertain if America desperately WANTS to be My Cat, or if she just really loves hanging out in my porch.

I mean, on the other hand, I’m told that I am Disney’s The Jungle Book at the drive-in old, but I was, like, 2 or 3 at the time. :-D

I've heard of this song literally twice: both times, people were pointing out that they hadn't heard of this song in response to this article. Strangely, it doesn't to get any playtime on the local alt-rock station or on NPR. :-D

If you're NOT in the market for a straight razor, my guess would be a collectible-but-not-very-popular coin or glass bottle. Common as dirt, desirably enough not to be destroyed, but not desirable enough to be expensive.

MishaOutLoud @mishaoutloud.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I mean, I once got a 100+ year old straight razor for about that... Might have been a little more, and that was a while back now, so... inflation...

A man who doesn't know his own address or phone number is a man who has other people to do all the minutia of filling out forms and paying for gas and ordering pizza for him. This is not a man I would trust to make decisions impacting the world. This is not a man whose pizza order I would trust.

The story I heard -- years ago -- about the development of the A10 was that they had a cool, big cannon, so they slapped a bullet-proof bathtub in front of the ammo magazine for a cockpit, then built a plane around it. :-D

Honestly, given that they were bought by private equity 10 years ago, I'm a little surprised their service has been half way decent as long as it has.
