Ordinary people are merely curious, but the Greek philosopher is Epic-curious.

Can I just say how much I UTTERLY DESPISE this habit of "describing" a thing by listing its contents/attributes in sentence fragments? "They sent their best man. John Smith. A survivalist. Oxford-educated." Those rare instances that aren't AI slop, please stop. It's not profound. It's overdone.

First time I took note of Sam Neill was in "And Then There Were None". He was an older, greying guy with a heavy moustache. Then "Peaky Blinders": he was an older, greying guy with a heavy moustache. I have no idea what to do with these images of him in "Jurassic Park".

Of course Norway's economic policies should favour lower income coastal communities. They're a nation built on a fjord ability.

Did you hear about the goblin horde that commissioned gnoll blacksmiths to sharpen the swords of their bugbear heroes? They knew that a gnoll edge is power. D&D joke or DAD joke? You decide.

Today I learned that Sarah Winchester (of the Winchester Mystery House fame) had a female personal physician (very progressive for the 1800s) and this doctor's name was ... Euthanasia Meade. Never mind that she's a medical professional named Euthanasia. Who names their daughter Euthanasia??

I keep thinking about this bit in one of the HHGttG books, about modern humans being descended from all the inept losers (eg, telephone sanitisers) who'd been expelled by the elites of their planet ... And how all those elites then died out from a disease transmitted through a dirty telephone.

The suburban expansion of #London is as much a feature of the #1920s as flappers and jazz, and the driving force behind it is #WW1 (of course) and something that looks suspiciously like the #cottagecore aesthetic.

Louis XVI of France was obsessed with locksmithing. If the French Revolution were an RPG campaign, he'd have picked the lock of his prison and escaped himself long before the PCs could find and rescue him.

#Fashion always means something, whether we're talking clothes or #books. Here is my personal theory on where #flappers, #WinniethePooh, and #PTSD meet: one of the many factors going into the post-WW1 #1920s mindset.

Grade A #BookReview: A Pretender’s Murder by Christopher Huang
My Review: In the first book in this series, A Gentleman’s Murder, we were introduced to the rarefied world of the Britannia, one of Britain’s rarefied ‘gentlemen’s clubs’. The Britannia, with its particular long and storied history, is a bit different from the more famous, and occasionally infamous, White’s, Brooks’s and Boodle’s. Because prospective members do not merely need to be ‘gentlemen’ but need specifically to be gentlemen who have served in one of Britain’s many, many wars over the centuries since the Britannia was founded.

ONE DAY MORE before A Pretender's Murder officially releases into the wild!
Three books nestled in a blue armchair with a sepia-patterned cushion: A Gentleman's Murder, Unnatural Ends, and A Pretender's Murder. Before them, a dagger-like letter opener with a lion's head handle lies on the coils of an undone burgundy bowtie.

ONE WEEK TO GO! We see a lot of front covers, but how about this back cover for A PRETENDER'S MURDER? Many thanks to Martin Edwards (@martinedwardsbooks.bsky.social) and S.A. Cosby (@blacktopkid.bsky.social) for the kind words. (go read their books)
Back cover of A Pretender's Murder: black side-face silhouette on a red background, with a jigsaw puzzle texture and two pieces removed from the silhouette. Blurbs from Martin Edwards ("Christopher Huang's knack for creating mysteries in the Golden Age tradition is displayed splendidly in A Pretender's Murder.") and S.A. Cosby ("A Pretender's Murder is a dazzlinbg labyrinthine mystery that combines the best of the pantheon of the classics of the genre with a fresh and unique perspective.")
