headache today so instead of forcing myself to do the shit i need to get done asap i've been working on decorating one of my tanks in tiny aquarium. it's not done but i'm pleased with it so far

Come to bed.” Grimacing, Hubert weighs his words carefully. “A travesty,” he agrees. He rolls his quill between his fingers, delaying his reply until Ferdinand, halfway through loosening his laces, looks up at him in irritation. “Come to bed,” Ferdinand repeats, honeyed eyes boring into him. Hubert feels like an insect trapped in amber. His throat is tight; his guts roil in his chest. “I must decline,” he manages. “You cannot,” Ferdinand says, plaintive and angry with desperation, slamming his foot back down onto the flagstone. “Not tonight.” “I’m afraid I have to.”$

i'm trying very gradually dip my toes back into writing again! my goal here was to complete something at least a hundred words long

Hubert barely registers a faint pressure through the leather of his boot before the horse’s hoof slams down on its tip, crushing his toes with what Hubert’s currently inclined to believe is the full force of the beast’s weight.

“Fuck,” he snarls, and shoves at its barrel chest in an effort to force the creature off of him to no effect. “Get off me, you damned –”

“Oh, enough! There is hardly any need for such language,” Ferdinand chides, circling around the horse’s other side. A small tug of the lead sees the horse step forward, finally freeing Hubert’s foot from certain doom. “You know he cannot understand you. Besides, think of how poor Marianne would feel if she had heard you! You know how she so treasures Dorte.”

An unpleasant, unnamed feeling settles in the pit of Hubert’s chest once more. “Marianne von Edmund,” Hubert drawls, poisonous and deliberate, “is not here. Nor is she a member of our House.”

Ferdinand puffs up in indignation, as he often does when Hubert is involved. “So her feelings mean nothing to you?” he snaps.

“They mean very little,” says Hubert coldly. “The horse’s, even less.”

“And mine?” Ferdinand asks, low with stifled rage.

Hubert pauses, lips parted, that persistent, unnamed sensation banging from within his ribs.

“Nothing at all.”
