I’m co-organising a medieval conference next year in Oxford! Please take a look at the CfP and consider submitting an abstract, by the 15th of September, to bordersboundariesbarriers@gmail.com. We hope to be able to provide funding to help cover expenses of attendance. #medievalsky #skystorians
Borders, Boundaries, and Barriers have become increasingly prominent themes in historical scholarship. There is, therefore, a pressing need to examine how these
constructs have shaped the lived experiences of historically marginalised groups, as well as how they were
perceived, defined, and engaged with by those groups.
This conference seeks to reorient discussions around borders, boundaries, and barriers by foregrounding the
experiences and perspectives of marginalised groups and considering how these divisions were perceived from
the peripheries of societies. Rather than treating these concepts as abstract or solely geopolitical, we will explore
the ways in which they have operated — both historically and historiographically — as tools of exclusion and
differentiation.
Organised by Natasha Jenman (University of Oxford), Naomi Reiter (QMUL), and Dean A. Irwin (University
of Lincoln/OCHJS), the conference will focus on individuals, religious groups, social groups, societal
constructions, and natural phenomena. Participants are invited to explore the role played by evolving borders,
boundaries, and barriers in the medieval world as part of group identities; and how groups used them to their
advantage. Likewise, it will consider the extent to which borders, boundaries and barriers have been imposed
upon the medieval world by modern scholars. Possible topics for consideration include:
• Legal jurisdictions
• The natural and the supernatural worlds
• Socio-economic strata
• Ritual and religion
• Space, time, and the environment
• Gender and sexuality
• Disability
• Transgression, delinquency,
and the grey middle space
This conference adopts a broad chronological and geographical approach with submissions from all
historically-related disciplines being welcome. The conference will take place on 20 and 21 April 2026 in
Oxford. To submit, please send a title, abstract (c. 250 words), and a bio (c. 100 words) to:
bordersboundariesbarriers@gmail.com.

Was lucky to hear the incredible artist Adrián Viajero Román give a talk on his exhibition “Archivos Vivos” at National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture. His work evokes emotional, historical, and cultural layers of Puerto Rican identity, migration, and resilience.
Dark blue wall with two portraits next to a paper boat:

Perhaps home is not a place but simply an irrevocable condition
2016
Graphite on plywood, mixed media
This work reimagines the concept of "home," shifting it from a physical location to an idea or state of being. Rooted in memories and passed down through generations,
"home" finds expression in physical objects, which act as vessels for personal and collective histories. Central to this exploration are the stories of Adrian's paternal grandfather, Fernando Román, and my maternal grandfather, Felix Pérez-two Puerto Rican migrants who journeyed to New York during "The Great Migration" of the 1940's. They left their homes and families behind, seeking better opportunities amidst the challenging conditions of post-war Puerto Rico.
Felix Pérez migrated in 1946, shortly after World War II, and later served aboard the Constitution State merchant marine ship during the Korean War. Fernando Román followed in 1947, traveling aboard the SS Marine Tiger during a significant wave of post-war migration. Their stories reflect resilience and determination, emblematic of the broader Puerto Rican migration experience.
Both men endured poverty,
discrimination, and harsh living conditions, yet their journeys symbolize the sacrifices made in pursuit of brighter futures. Their experiences honor the blending of Puerto Rican heritage with life in the U.S., preserving cultural identity while navigating the complexities of migration and adaptation.
Through their lives, this work pays tribute to the enduring spirit of migrants and the transformative nature of home—a place that exists as much in memory and legacy as in geography.Young boy sculpture of wood:

Si, Yo Sueño Yes, I Dream
2010
Graphite on wood, Mixed Media Grafito sobre madera, medio mixto
Inspired by Jack Delano's 1941 photograph of a farm boy in Corozal, Puerto Rico, focuses on the children and families of land and factory workers.
Using upcycled
materials from rural and industrial environments, the piece reflects the labor-intensive lives of these communities. The child symbolizes their enduring spirit, while the textured materials evoke the connection between home, work, and the land. Also highlighting the unseen struggles and
contributions of these families, emphasizing the deep cultural ties and resilience that shaped Puerto Rican history.Room full of people for talk at the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & CultureIntroductory text above a suitcase full of objects, “ADRIAN VIAJERO ROMÁN
