𝘼𝙬𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 🌿

The forest was hungry. The forest was tired.
It had been burned and blasted and dug and cut in every which way it could imagine. Its creatures had run away and come back only to be chased off again.
It was ancient but this had been going on for centuries.
And so it willed the rest of itself awake.
It began with earthquakes. Volcanic eruptions. Soot darkened the skies and blocked out the sun. Then came the pests once lurking in the depths of its yearning black heart, hoping to find something that could fill it back up again. The forest was indifferent to humans before.
Now, it had to eat.

“But what about the money”, they’d scream and fight, “It costs too much!” Or “It’s not enough!” Always something about the money. They say it’s just a thing but it’s become a creature that’s gone to feast off us.

There’s a corruption in my family when it comes to money. I’m still trying to figure it out. It’s not in the coins or bills themselves, I’ve tried collecting them on their own to no effect. No. There’s something wrong with the numbers when it enters their heads.

In the evening, when shadows are free to roam, they take the tales they’ve swapped. They bring the day’s stories to the Moon who then takes and spins them into dreams or nightmares for people to find in their minds.

When the sun hangs high above the clouds, the shadows scatter back home, free to weave and wander away from the world that they’ve been made to serve. They find solace in the planet’s underbelly where they take turns whispering and swapping secrets of things to come.

Critters stopped showing up once the strangers started coming over in droves. That was around the same time that the grass started turning yellow all year round. Now it’s the birds that are leaving. I wonder who’s gone next.

There are no more jackalopes in Texas. Chupacabra stopped screeching a while back. Bigfoot still roams but far up in the mountains with the Bear King and the Ozark Howler. Someone said they saw the Lake Worth Monster get shot and driven around on the back of a newfangled truck like a trophy.

Attention all kids! We have an issue: The grownups have done something BAD. They've gone and told a BIG LIE. They won't say what it is. They won't tell us the truth either. No liars in this Big House! So we are taking their SIMON. From now on, NO MORE SIMON SAYS! All games of Simon Says are OVER!

I never answered for anything odd after that ever since then. Learned my lesson, maybe. Oh, and I got a camera doorbell for good measure, just in case the thing came back again. I know it's out there, somewhere.
