The paradox of representation 🌀 These authors 🧵 offer a generalisable assessment of voter-party alignment, using a unique Slovakian dataset to show that whilst personalised representation maximises policy alignment, it also fosters fragmentation buff.ly/A5Hc2Kt

The framework offers a more nuanced and generalizable assessment of voter-party alignment and representative quality in fragmented party systems of the contemporary, capturing not just how alignment occurs, but the democratic tensions it entails.

Representation, centered on voter-defined priorities, maximizes policy alignment but fosters fragmentation, as voters often find multiple parties equally proximate. By contrast, party-centered representation sharpens partisan distinctiveness but increases ideological distance from voters.

The framework operationalizes measurment of voter-party alignment across three dimensions and the full party-voter matrix. Using VAA data from Slovakia's 2023 elections (N=134,699), we also show that how you measure representation changes what you find.

We propose a novel framework, "multi-point congruence", that integrates insights from social theory diagnoses of modern societies with empirical approaches in political science. This way, we can better capture the representative fit between voters and parties under conditions of social modernity.

First post & also first @apsa.bsky.social annual conference. Phenomenal people, great conversations, and a ton of exciting work. Presented on ideological labels moving from symbolic markers to structuring political belief. Based on a N=7,688 survey experiment from our in-house Volebny Kompas panel.
