It could not be more clear why children are struck and seriously injured at intersections like this, here a 6 year old girl struck by a driver turning right on red (no charges confirmed) Yet no response at all other than a PSA is the usual response www.ctvnews.ca/regina/artic...

this matters because Canadian crash data reveals alarming, very preventable consistent infrastructure trends. www.regionofwaterloo.ca/programs-and...
Region of Waterloo information:

Walking safety
Pedestrians face a higher risk at signalized intersections:

89% of pedestrian collisions are at signalized intersections
56% of pedestrians who are hit by vehicles have the right of way
1 in 3 pedestrian collisions are caused by a turning vehicle

you won't find many journalists who will get outraged about the true reasons pedestrians are struck and injured or killed so frequently, and demand action on banning the causes www.regionofwaterloo.ca/programs-and...

He's makes a good point, but not the one intended Why do we quietly accept so many road deaths
Quote by Jonathan Adkins, CEO of Governors Highway Safety Association: "For years, we have expected autonomous vehicles to be flawless while quietly accepted a human driving record that kills more than 36,000 people on our road every year. Innovation and safety are not completing goals"

Evidence that safety improvements won't happen unless you take direct action. Politicians also often only act after hearing complaints from their constituents www.ctps.org/data/html/st...
Extract from 2015 Boston study:

Converting Pedestrian Signal Phasings

Although conversion of pedestrian signal phase type is infrequent, the decision to change existing pedestrian signal phasing can evolve from several sources of input (Figure 10).

FIGURE 10. Bar chart showing survey results of the sources of input that influence the decision to change existing pedestrian signal phasing

Citizen complaints are the most influential factor that drives the process of changing a pedestrian signal phasing. Eight municipalities stated that they are greatly influenced by citizen complaints.
Recommendations based on safety and operations data and the expertise of engineers and planners were also dominant factors that municipalities rely upon in changing pedestrian signal phasings.
Political pressure appears to be the least influential factor that municipalities rely upon in changing pedestrian signal phasings

everything at the crash scene prioritizes space and speed for vehicles, yet it could so easily be changed with measures like a refuge island And when we read scarce information which minimises the role of the driver, we expect no further action. www.ctvnews.ca/northern-ont...

somehow we have developed and normalized an infrastructure-caused deathtrap for pedestrians, then claim measures which address it have "potential safety impacts" Nothing could be worse than the status quo - many dozens of serious crashes per year resulting from this trap

Can you believe that N American engineers combine turning movements on a green light with pedestrians on the walk sign, resulting in multiple times more injuries and fatalities than the deadly RTOR www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis...
Graphic showing killed and serious injury pedestrian crashes at signalized intersections in Toronto.
27% of all KSI crashes are caused by left turns on a green
9% of KSI crashes are causing by right turns, on both a red and green
4% are caused by drivers going through a red light.

The dead pedestrian is often implicitly portrayed as the wrong-doer, "crossing mid-block", dressed in dark clothing, etc. This whole area belongs to vehicles, who do their own killings www.google.com/maps/place/M...

York Region's annual safety reports identify that "Driver behaviour is the leading cause of motor vehicle collisions" but you won't hear that in their victim-blaming PSA's written by drivers, of course www.facebook.com/YorkRegionGo...
Be aware! Walking or cycling while distracted can be dangerous. Reminder to look up, be alert, and always cross at designated areas. It only takes a moment to prevent a collision. 🚶‍♂️🚲

Secretary Pete Buttigieg: Your ability to bike or cross the street safely is absolutely a matter of infrastructure.

ready for next level victim blaming? Remember the "car" turned into you because you were wearing universally worn dark clothing. And if struck on the sidewalk, maybe you weren't far enough from the road? rcmp.ca/en/bc/safety...
Advice from RCMP: Both pedestrians and drivers have a responsibility to ensure that both parties remain safe in their travels. Below are some tips that all pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders, and vehicles should practice.

Pedestrians
Walk on the inside edge of the sidewalk so you are further away from traffic.
If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles.
Cross only at intersections or marked crosswalks. Never jay walk.
Dress to be seen especially at night and on dark/overcast days.
Make sure you can hear and see oncoming cars. Remove your headphones and your hood when crossing the street.
Make eye contact with drivers. Keep your head up and look where you’re walking. Never assume that drivers see you.
Always look for signs that a vehicle is about to move (rear lights, exhaust smoke, sound of motor, wheels turning).
