Went to an academic talk put on by one of the local universities on “The End of Mathematics” The professor didn’t have anything hopefully to say except, “misery loves company” People asked about their children’s future and he said, “I can’t predict what’ll happen even 1 year from now” 1/8

Per capita emissions are a better data point to go off of. But it could be improved if we could somehow associate externalities with that rate. Like if Canada imports a lot of goods from a high polluting country, then the emissions from the production of those imports should be counted in Canada.

I had a thought that extends the anthropic principle to the existence of the Laws of Nature: The more intelligence a species has, the better they are at pattern recognition. #anthropicprinciple #philosophy #science #PhilosophyOfScience 1/4

Reading the Encyclopedia Britannica article on the conclusion of the war of 1812, I’m noticing interesting parallels. “The unanimous ratification by the U.S. Senate of the Treaty […] and the celebrations that followed cloaked the fact that the United States had achieved none of its objectives”

Book idea: Children’s book of short fables and stories to teach them critical thinking. Like the Emperor’s New Clothes story and how it teaches about the harms of groupthink bias, the appeal to authority, or bandwagon fallacies.

“What have seen is that LLMs are very good at turning people who have no skill into people who are capable of an average mediocre outcome. They are extremely bad at helping someone who's already extremely good [at] getting better. It basically doesn't work.” - François Chollet #MindscapePodcast

This eastern gray treefrog really freaked me out for a moment when I was cleaning debris from my pool. #photography
Gray treefrog (a.k.a. Eastern gray treefrog — among other names), was perched on the side of my above ground pool’s skimmer port. It jumped there from my hand when I scooped a bunch of debris that had gathered in my skimmer overnight. Don’t worry the pump wasn’t on, so I don’t think the frog was ever at risk. And the pool chemicals are far from balanced so it’s unlikely that would have harmed the little guy either.

Someone is trying to convince me that the fact that humans can reason is evidence that god exists. I don’t think this is evidence, and I’ve provided my own counterarguments, but I’m curious… What would you say to this?

Anyone care to explain to me why the Möbius Function is applicable to correct for J(x)’s deviations from π(x) in Riemann’s paper? Seems like an arbitrary choice on the surface but I’ll admit I haven’t dug into it. #mathematics #riemannhypothesis

If I could change one thing about math it’d be the convention of placing variables next to brackets to imply multiplication. Letters, greek or otherwise, directly beside brackets should be left for functions.

At work, the term “woke” was used by someone I know pretty well. They also said, “my facts don’t care about their feelings” I kept my mouth shut and didn’t comment either way, because this was at work and I didn’t want to create conflict.

I like to think of time not as the 4th dimension but as the 0th dimension. Because we cannot stop our movement through this dimension. It’s persistent. Always there. The other dimensions seem more of a layer on top.

Pew research has shown a resurgence of religious affiliation. A major component of this is people searching for a large community of others with similar values. What are some secular communities that could serve the same purpose?

I love a good scientific mystery. I’m sure a lot do. The trick is to not get too attached to whatever crackpot theory you come up with so that when the actual experts solve the mystery you can accept the real solution.

The best art allows people to take the meaning out of it that they resonate the most with. In that way art is almost like a customized window showing an individual what they enjoy the most.

#Kerning is supposed to make the average space between letter in a typeface appear more evenly distributed. But there’s something that still seems off about this one and I can’t put my finger on it.
The thumbnail for Disney+’s show named “EARTH MOODS”, written in two lines and horizontally centred in the middle of the screen.

Yet you’d expect the middle letters of each word to be directly above each other but they’re not. Instead the 2nd letters are aligned.

I think the Riemann Zeta function collapses infinities of all p-adics into the complex plane. I also think that the zeta zeroes are related to primes because only primes lead to the most “complete” infinities. No idea if any of this has merit, but it’s fun to think on.

You should be able to reconstruct why you believe what you believe from the ground up and keep the same opinion. But you might not find this an effective activity if you’re stuck in a biased bubble of information.
