IR Book of the Week! "Taming the Careerists" by Minju Kim. When it comes to US foreign policy, we focus a lot on Presidents, top-level diplomats, and the close advisers to both. But US foreign policy is also dramatically (and surprisingly, as Kim shows) influenced by career bureaucrats.

My paper with Bo Won Kim is out at the Review of International Organizations (doi.org/10.1007/s115...)! If you are interested in the growing role of lawyers in international commerce and how they can shape the design of international cooperation, this paper may be of interest. 🧵

My book, Taming the Careerists, will be published by Cambridge University Press this September! There is growing debate over whether federal employees should be easier to dismiss in order to make them more responsive to presidential directives. What would be the consequences of such a change?

How does transparency affect the behavior of international bureaucrats tasked with facilitating negotiations? In new work with Sojun Park in the Review of International Organizations (doi.org/10.1007/s115..., it’s open access!), we provide an answer in the context of the WTO.

My ambassador paper with Shu Fu is out in @worldpolitics.bsky.social! Ambassadors promote domestic exports to a host country and represent the interests of their home country at large. However, are trade benefits equally distributed domestically? 🧵 muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/articl...
