Several activities were planned, though some ended up being cut to not bloat the game, like house customization and dog training. 13 years later, the LEGO Friends theme would launch with its own game also titled "LEGO Friends", though it's unknown if it took any inspiration from the original.

27 years ago this month, LEGO Friends released. The game was created out of an attempt by the LEGO Group to research if there was a market for video games aimed at teenage girls.

One year ago today, LEGO Party! released. Around 250 minigames were prototyped during its development, with the ones able to have a title featuring a pun usually being selected.

11 years ago today, LEGO Dimensions released. TT Games had always struggled with getting license-holders to agree to a game mixing multiple IPs, especially with the lack of paid DLCs at the time. However, the success of The LEGO Movie as well as the arrival of toys-to-life changed this.

Developer Mindscape had originally planned multiple sequels, but the company firing their employees so they didn’t have to pay bonuses led the LEGO Group to revoke their license and have another company handle them.

29 years ago today, LEGO Island released. The game is actually heavily based on the multiple intelligence theory, with players being able to switch between characters that embody unique abilities like mathematics, music and coordination.

Because of this, testing the first level, where simply pressing the accelerator allows you to win, was incredibly boring, leading to the developers coming up with "the orange test", where a literal orange was placed on the acceleration key:

26 years ago today, LEGO Stunt Rally released. Originally, the game offered free-roam racing, but young players frequently getting lost after going off-road lead to the vehicles being put on rails, though this functionality can still be re-enabled using console commands.

I'd definitely love a modern LEGO racing game closer to LEGO Racers than LEGO 2K Drive, though I'm not sure TT Games would be the best pick for it. It has been more than two decades since they last worked on one of those...

Would definitely love another LEGO City Undercover style game. The closest we've gotten to a "LEGO GTA" in recent times is LEGO Fortnite Brick Life and it's very much nowhere near that.

Notably, six months into development, most of the team was moved to work on LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. Once they managed to get that out in time for the film, they returned, having learned new techniques.

18 years ago today, LEGO Batman: The Video Game released. Due to the 90s films and Dark Knight Trilogy being considered too dark for the target audience, TT Games instead opted to create an original story with a focus on which environments to portray, like abandoned fairgrounds.

It notably features a character exclusive to those who purchased the original film on home media but, as this promotion has since ended, you'd have no way of knowing the cheat code "D9TZ39".

Nine years ago today, The LEGO NINJAGO Movie Video Game released. As it was the first LEGO game to not release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, several improvements were made to its graphics, lightning and performance, like allowing for more enemies to be on the screen at once.

Originally, the titular team featured a ton of different characters, including a chef, gymnast, magician, scientist and musician, but the LEGO Group wanted a more male-oriented spy team, leading to all but two of those to be thrown out:

26 years ago today, LEGO Alpha Team released. The earliest concept for the game was that basic household objects, like dog bowls and toasters, were actually secretly powered by incredibly complicated contraptions controlled by minifigures.

25 years ago today, LEGO Racers 2 released. When work on the game started, developer Attention to Detail requested a large amount of LEGO bricks from the LEGO Group to make physical prototypes of the vehicles. This led to their offices being quickly covered in bricks.

During development, the team prototyped power-ups in Stud.io before sending them to the LEGO Group for approval. Beyond giving feedback, the company would also occasionally bring real-life versions of the models when visiting.

20 years ago today, LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy released. Originally, you wouldn't have unlocked the final level of each episode after completing the fifth one. Instead, you needed to earn a certain amount of gold bricks, similarly to the bonus levels.

The open world, however, felt much more like a chore, mainly due to the repetitiveness of the side activities, some of which you have to attempt multiple times due to unforgiving conditions, as well as the fact that it all looks the same which, yeah, it's Gotham City.

Just 100% LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight! 🥳 Playing through this game's story was an incredible experience from start to finish. As a massive Batman fan, getting to progress through all of his different incarnations, from the humorous 60s to the much more serious 2010s, was a blast.
