In Rome for a few months, any libraries I must visit? (Potentially with a selection of books in English, as I do not speak Italian.) Any other recommendations welcome!! #Booksky #literature

My next read was Help Wanted by Adelle Waldman. I liked its take on the banality of big corporate day-to-day operations, politics and decisions. Also it being an Obama reading pick, makes me wonder, is there an irony here I’m missing. #Booksky #literature #fiction

The next read was A Way of Life, Like Any Other by Darcy O’Brien. The descriptions of golden age Hollywood were vivid, but one thing that kept coming to my mind is “downward mobility” and what it means for those coming after us to have it worse economically. #booksky #literature #fiction

Wake up, Sir! by Jonathan Ames had its moments, but for a book described as hilarious, it was pretty grim, especially the end. Also I totally missed that a main character was just a fragment of another character’s imagination. Overall a good read. #booksky #literature

I consider myself to be a slow reader, so to finish this in one day was something for me. The King of Fools by Frédéric Dard was a page turner that I haven’t experienced in a while. #booksky #literature #fiction

I must’ve gone through something similar because the finals took so much energy and effort, I must’ve needed some time off.

I can’t even describe how excited I am for the next book. I felt like the whole book 4 was building up to something, and it didn’t disappoint.

Not sure if a thing such as a “reader’s block” exists, but in the past two months I couldn’t summon the energy to do reading. Glad to have put an end to that with Slovej Balle’s book 4 of her series On the Calculation of Volume. #booksky #literature #fiction

Aaand continuing with the next book right away, my first non-fiction in a while: Søren Mau's Mute Compulsion. I'm reading this with a potential mission: writing a paper for a business economics course I'm attending at university, if I can find the right angle for it. #Booksky #Nonfiction #Marx

I loved the flow of prose and descriptions of nature and country idyll. The irrationality and incomprehensibility of the protagonists' actions was something I could relate, based on my own experiences. Finally, I also learned that geishas used to be male performers until mid-18th century. (2/2)

Finished Yasunari Kawabata's Snow Country and I liked it, despite it not being the type of novel I usually read. My first instinct was to say that there was not enough character development. But upon more reflection, I ended up thinking why should there be? (1/2) #Booksky #Literature #Fiction

The next reading is Yasunari Kawabata’s Snow Country. It’s been sitting on my shelf for at least 4 years. I used to have this habit of not buying new books unless I read the ones I already had. Somehow I realized that’s a nonsense rule. Books don’t have expiration dates! #Booksky #Literature

Lastly, I believe that a good writer is able to stir our feelings toward a fictional character, as if they were real people. I absolutely despised Ellinor's apathy and alienation. Her transformation felt cathartic and along the way I also got to reflect on my apathies. (3/3) #Booksky #Literature

Second, I absolutely loved the opening sentence of the book. It was the perfect blend of randomness and relatability, and it felt like something that would definitely happen to me. (2/3)
The opening sentence of the book, which goes as follows: As I was putting away in my basement lock-up some saucepans that couldn't be used with my new induction hob, I came across an old diary from 2000.

I've been thinking about sharing few of my thoughts about the books I finish reading, and I feel like Long Live the Post Horn! is a great one to start with. First, I loved the inside cover closeup of a mail sorting shelf, which I hadn't noticed until I started reading the book last week. (1/3)

I’d say give it a try. The book goes beyond the 1984 timeline, and opens up an interesting perspective as to what may happen after one has been in Room 101. Also, while Orwell may have ended the book on a pessimistic tone with this behemoth of a party in charge, Newman takes a different route.

After a short break, back to reading Perfection by Vincenzo Latronico. I was captivated by the description of the book, but I don’t know exactly what to expect. Also off topic, but I wish Fitzcarraldo’s font were a tiny little bit bigger. #Booksky #Literature #Fiction

That’s great to hear! I was a bit reluctant at the start of the first volume, not exactly sure how I felt about it. But as the story progressed I was drawn to it more. I loved the second volume, and now I can’t wait for the rest of the books to be translated into English.

Influential people are very likely to already know/have the information Bouie could give. This line of argument is no different than “I’m staying on Twitter/X because right-wing nutjobs would not otherwise be exposed to my perspectives”

Trump supporters are afraid to even entertain an inkling of the idea that their issues are not caused by migrants, trans people, feminists and whatever label the right-wing media ecosystem points out to, because doing so may give them the unwanted truth, and they may need to update their beliefs.

I believe that this part from Susan Sontag’s introduction in The Case of Comrade Tulayev by Victor Serge perfectly describes why some current Trump supporters, especially those most hurt by his policies, stubbornly refuse to accept the seek the truth.
Serge, modestly, says it only takes some clarity and independence to tell the truth. In Memoirs of a Revolutionary, he writes:
I give myself credit for having seen clearly in a number of important situations. In itself, this is not so difficult to achieve, and yet it is rather unusual. To my mind, it is less a question of an exalted or shrewd intelligence, than of good sense, goodwill and a certain sort of courage to enable one to rise above both the pressures of one's environment and the natural inclination to close one's eyes to facts, a temptation that arises from our immediate interests and from the fear which problems inspire in us. A French essayist has said: "What is terrible when you seek the truth, is that you find it." You find it, and then you are no longer free to follow the biases of your personal circle, or to accept fashionable clichés.

"What is terrible when you seek the truth..." A dictum to be pinned above every writer's desk
