Changed Block Tracking for CSI drivers is now beta in Kubernetes, via the v1.0.0 release of external-snapshot-metadata in March 2026. Alpha shipped September 2025. Relevant if your backup tooling still copies whole volumes per snapshot instead of only the blocks that changed.

A bind mount over a container directory does not merge with what the image put there. It hides it for as long as the mount exists. Mount an empty host dir over the app's config path and the image's files vanish from the container's view; they are not overwritten, just obscured.

Kubernetes v1.37 promotes PersistentVolumeClaimUnusedSinceTime to beta, enabled by default. The PVC protection controller now sets an Unused condition on each PVC saying whether any running pod references it. Orphaned-volume audits no longer need a script that cross-references pod specs.

In-place pod resize went GA in v1.35. v1.37 adds the missing half in Alpha: scheduler preemption for resize, so a growing pod can take room from lower-priority work. Worth noting the trade-off, a resize is no longer a node-local, blast-radius-free operation.

Gang scheduling is Beta in Kubernetes v1.37: the Workload and PodGroup APIs, Workload-Aware Preemption, and shared DRA ResourceClaims across a PodGroup all graduate together. Relevant if you have ever watched a distributed training job sit half-scheduled and burn GPU hours.

Node Lifecycle Conditions land in v1.37. Until now, draining, under maintenance and graceful shutdown were things you inferred from taints, labels, annotations or a cloud provider API. A first-party condition means tooling can read one field instead of guessing from four.

v1.37 promotes PersistentVolumeClaimUnusedSinceTime to Beta, on by default. The PVC protection controller now writes an Unused condition on each claim, so answering which PVCs no pod references stops being a cross-reference script against every pod spec in the namespace.

Kubernetes put cgroup v1 management into maintenance mode back in v1.31, and v2 is where the work has gone since. Cheapest way to know what a node actually runs: stat -fc %T /sys/fs/cgroup. cgroup2fs is the unified hierarchy; tmpfs means you are still on v1.

Let's Encrypt's shortlived profile issues certificates valid for 160 hours, under seven days. At that lifetime, renewal stops being a cron job you can ignore. Renew with a third of the window left and you have about two days of slack to notice a quiet failure, not thirty.

ext4 has deprecated the journalled data=journal mount option, with removal planned. If you set it for full data journalling on a database or a mail spool, that option is now on a clock. Better to find it in fstab now than to meet the default change during an unrelated kernel bump.

Kubernetes v1.37 adds emptyDir permission modes and bind mount options. The value is writing the policy in the pod spec instead of engineering around its absence: stop one container deleting another's files, stop binaries dropped into a writable volume from being executed.

Memory QoS is beta and enabled by default in Kubernetes v1.37, which makes it a behaviour change you get without opting into it. It leans on the cgroup v2 memory controller to give the kernel better guidance on container memory. Alpha since v1.22, tiered reservation added in v1.36.

Kubernetes node swap is now generally available. The argument for it is density, not thrift: agentic workloads allocate a large footprint at startup, then sit idle holding it resident. RAM caps pods per node long before CPU does, and swap moves those idle pages out of the way.

AWS publishes Lambda layer ARNs as public SSM parameters, so CloudFormation can take {{resolve:ssm:<path>}} instead of a pasted ARN. The trade-off: resolution happens at deploy time, so a routine stack update can move you onto a layer version you did not pick.

Debian 11 bullseye left LTS on 2026-08-31. If you still have FROM debian:bullseye in a Dockerfile, the tag keeps building and stops getting security updates. No error, no warning. Worth a grep -r bullseye across your image definitions before the next CVE lands.

The expensive part of a custom Kubernetes exporter is not the handler, it is label cardinality. A label carrying pod name or request id mints a new series on every restart, and Prometheus keeps each one for the whole retention window. Aggregate before you expose.

An overloaded listener does not refuse connections, it drops them: once the accept queue fills, the kernel discards the ACK and the client sits in SYN retries. On a listening socket ss -ltn shows Recv-Q as queue depth, Send-Q as the backlog cap. somaxconn will not help if listen() asks for less.

Most npm supply chain hits arrive as lifecycle scripts that run at install time. npm ci --ignore-scripts skips postinstall entirely and still installs the tree; the few packages that genuinely need a build step you run explicitly. npm ci also fails rather than quietly rewriting the lockfile.

systemd-cryptenroll --fido2-device=auto only works if the token exposes the hmac-secret extension; a plain U2F key enrolls nothing. The unlock secret is derived at boot from the token, not stored in the LUKS header, so keep a passphrase slot or the key becomes your single point of failure.

WireGuard fails quiet: it never answers unauthenticated packets and emits no ICMP, so wg-quick up exits 0 on a tunnel that will never pass traffic. Check wg show for a nonzero latest handshake before blaming the app. Peers behind NAT need PersistentKeepalive = 25 to stay reachable.

Rate limiting caps how much each caller sends. Admission control decides what gets served when capacity is short. Kubernetes has both: FlowSchema routes a request to a priority level, PriorityLevelConfiguration holds the seats. Watch apiserver_flowcontrol_rejected_requests_total.

OWASP CICD-SEC-4, poisoned pipeline execution, is the entry worth reading twice: a workflow that checks out a fork's head and then runs that fork's build scripts with repo secrets in scope. The fix is not scanning the fork harder, it is not handing untrusted code a token.

helm test only runs pods annotated helm.sh/hook: test. If your chart ships none, the command has nothing to run and comes back clean. Green there means the hook selector matched zero pods, not that the release works. Look at what it created before trusting it.

kubectl describe node reports Allocated resources as the sum of pod requests, not actual usage. A node can read 95% allocated while sitting at 20% real CPU. kubectl top node gives the other half. Allocatable is already capacity minus reserved and the eviction threshold.

An agent driving a real configurator in a browser hit a wedged sidecar mid-build. It told transport failure from lost session, confirmed state auto-saved server-side, then stopped instead of inventing a result. The real gap: nothing could restart the sidecar.

Rootless containers move the trust boundary, they do not delete it: a user namespace is isolation, not a sandbox. You get no root-owned daemon and uid remapping via /etc/subuid. You pay in ports under 1024 and storage drivers that want real root.

Fleet CPU at 61% against a 70% scale-out threshold, and the latency SLO is already burning. Averaged CPU hides per-pod queueing: a request waiting on a connection pool or a downstream call costs latency without costing cycles. Scale on request rate or queue depth.

Rootless Docker moves the daemon off root; it does not make the blast radius zero. Ports below 1024 need ip_unprivileged_port_start or CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE on rootlesskit, cgroup limits need v2 with systemd delegation, and an escape still lands as the user who owns your SSH keys.

If you built a controller with kubebuilder, the manager's client does not read from the API server. Get and List are served by an informer-backed cache, which is why a hot reconcile loop does not overwhelm the apiserver. The cost is RAM per watched type and reads that lag your own writes.

Traefik v3.7's kubernetesIngressNGINX provider reads Ingresses on the ingress-nginx class and translates the annotations, so the cutover is a load balancer IP handover, not an annotation rewrite. What it will not carry over: TLS redirect, default cert, global error pages, auth annotations.
