The woman interviewed gets shots every 6 months. But a good mask is much more effective protection against covid infection.

Ppl should ask themselves if they want more virus or less virus and then let that answer guide them to be quiet about maskers or keep being obtuse.

The mask material itself probably doesn't go bad. The straps might deteriorate, especially if they feel akin to rubber bands.

tbf, for measles the best defense is a couple of vaccine shots. I got one last year as a booster, plus I'm in the "one shot in childhood" age.

Yeah, "high quality" is pretty vague. Fried or scrambled eggs can be cheap, quick, and taste great, though it's not Chef Cooking. Rice and beans, + spices and ground meat, can be cheap, taste great, and take little active time via a slow cooker.

Actual apartments won't have raised beds, and may not have much space or sunlight for pots. North-facing windows, say. Possible concerns about small children or pets. Option for some, not "anyone can do".

Of course some people make their own, though I suspect many of the "from fresh" are growing their own tomatoes. Often canned > store "fresh" because canned can be picked at peak ripeness.

In Japan I found bags of frozen garlic cloves (whole) and frozen diced avocado. I've been tossing cloves into a pot, though might be better to thaw and cut/crush. Not sure of the best avocado use, I thawed some to just eat.

In 2015, 62% of US households lived in detached single-family houses, plenty of potential garden space, typically far more than they could use (large minimum lot sizes). Another 6% lived in attached housing, less clear on the garden space front. www.eia.gov/consumption/...

That said, big bags of store brand instant rice can be cheaper than I expected, around 450 calories/$. Making your own would be cheaper, but not a huge optimization if you're also buying meat etc.

Yeah! People can choose whatever, but they should be making _informed_ decisions. A rice cooker with "keep warm", or putting some cooked rice in the freezer (make your own microwave rice) can each further reduce the "plan ahead" problem.

US apartments: majority use electricity to cook[1], but many do use gas; it's pretty regional. (Also, almost all apts do have an oven.) Many apts don't have good ventilation, so yeah, long gas use is a valid concern for some. Not majority. [1] www.eia.gov/consumption/...

Those cruelties seem an adaptation choice; Book K&L are thick as thieves, and IIRC Mary is at worst ignored. Mockery aims outside the family, apart from Mr. Bennet's contempt for the women he chose and raised.

Lack of schooling is literally his fault. He could have hired a governess. They did have access to books or hired teachers, but at their discretion, no direction from the parents. Basically 'unschooled' kids, in the hippie movement sense.

Stone age societies famously low in warfare /s I would have turned to other explanations, like dragonrider peacekeepers, or geography.

What surprise twist? The very first words are SF, describing a lost colony planet that engineered dragons.

Or in comics, Saga, though there the fantastic elements are more outright magic, not buffer 'psionics'.

Darkover in particular had books with very different feels, from Age of Chaos high fantasy, to rediscovered planet oppressed by Terran colonists skeptical of any such powers. Stross's Merchant Princes series for a different straddle. Zelazny Jack of Shadows, Creatures of Light, Lord of Light.

mindstalk.bsky.social @mindstalk.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
A lot of earlier lost colony SF straddled the line, especially with psychic powers added. Darkover, Pern, Warlock, Steerswoman, Angel with a sword, Cloud's Rider, the Morgaine Cycle (I'm mentioning Cherryh a lot for some reason...)

I think my local library had Walter Jon Williams in fiction, despite a carousel of SFF paperbacks. Though now I'm not sure if they had a section for SFF hardcovers.

And it's _always_ been a post-apoc society, from the very beginning. Though a lot of details were inconsistent within _Dragonflight_ itself, never mind it and later books.

Related question is how many people there actually are. Big continent but not very arable, and needing universal stone shelters to survive every 200 years. And how much people shuffle around for ultimately genetic diversity reasons.

I'm inclined to maybe grumble about Pern being excessively low tech. Like, why would they lose printing?

OTOH, very old and dim memory suggests that AIVAS needed a "WTF are y'all speaking now" period before it could talk to the humans who dug it up. Of course, parchment docs are written, not spoken, could be more stable. And AIVAS had oral and written interfaces.

Related issue: how stable has Pern language been over _time_? I think there are enough old documents, plus dragging up Oldtimers from 400, that this is a real questions. I know a lot of scientific vocabulary got lost, but I think old docs were otherwise readable?

OTOH, I find Tolkien's justification for Common/Westron unconvincing, especially in the 1000 years before Bilbo and Frodo. Stability over 1000 years and 1000 miles, with little trade or contact? Suuure...

I dunno. Adapt poems and songs, or teach kids to understand you? Esp. if your ideology includes maintaining a common tongue. And if your org has been doing this from the beginning, thus curbing dialects. A lot of Pern was planned for the long term by the early "oops, Thread" generations.

In her notes in Tales of Earthsea, Le Guin seems to posit something similar, minus the Harper organization. 'Creation of Ea' and 'Tale of Morred' etc, being universally known and anchoring language against drift. As if all Greeks knew Homeric Greek because of the Iliad.

mindstalk.bsky.social @mindstalk.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I don't recall if it was 100% explicit, but I totally see the Harpers having a role here. Educated in a central place, then going out to all the Holds and Weyrs with Teaching Ballads. Maintaining something like Classical Arabic or medieval Latin, but at a popular and oral level.
100
mindstalk.bsky.social @mindstalk.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Thread is supposed to be the external threat that drives all that, but I find that a bigger handwave than Harpers maintaining at least a diglossic lingua franca.
100
mindstalk.bsky.social @mindstalk.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Is it explicit they're speaking 'English', vs. some language we read as English? Something like feudalism could plausibly re-arise with the right circumstances, but Pern is odd in avoiding those. No war! No obvious ruling class oppression. People obey Lords Holder... because.

The precise reason is late, but "dragonriders get apostrophes" is an obvious pattern from the beginning. Though not applied to queen riders.
010
mindstalk.bsky.social @mindstalk.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Those differences are functional, not just drift. Harpers are big on Teaching Songs, IIRC, so I think unification efforts are plausibly oral not just written.

Aha, a very helpful apostrophe history chart!
Anne McCaffrey, whose popular Dragonriders of Pern series included character names such as F’lar. Dragonflight, the first book in the series was published in 1968, but appeared in short story form in Analog science fiction magazine in late 1967. Although McCaffrey may have been extraordinarily influential in popularizing this use of the apostrophe, I did find a few earlier examples.
YEAR DETAILS
1955 J'onn J'onnz (a character), Detective Comics
1959 Hawaii becomes a state (Hawai'i, Maui, O'ahu, Kaho'olawe, Lanai, Moloka'i, Kaua'i and Ni'ihau)
1965 Muad'Dib (a creature and a constellation), Dune, Frank Herbert
1967 TPau and T'Pring (characters), Star Trek, "Amok Time," Theodore Sturgeon
1968 F'lar (character), Dragonflight, Anne McCaffrey (published in short story form in October and December of 1967.)
1969 Pei'ans (a race), Isle of the Dead, Roger Zelazny
1969 D'donori (a place) Creatures of Light and Darkness, Roger Zelazny

Also something the Harper Hall would try to fight. Writing popular songs in the desired dialect to keep everyone on board, or at least diglossic.

Stop tut-tutting artists for making art you or the hive decided was immoral because it's bad in real life. Christ. Never see anyone complaining about fictional murder when they watch a procedural crime drama, but fictional sex has to follow The Rules or else the artist deserves harassment, right?
