You pick up a book with a mech flying through space on the cover. It has cat ears and claws. The back describes a story in which a character created for war breaks free from her chains and gains her freedom. This is the first page, with chapter 1 on the very next page, do you keep reading?

It has been over a hundred years since humanity first discovered the gravity tunnels connecting the stars, allowing for faster than light travel. Many hoped this would hail a new era of exploration and expansion, led by a united humanity. However reality proved to be a cruel mistress.

Instead of unity, the people of earth left in in droves to colonize far off worlds and declaring independence the second they were self-sufficient.
Instead of a single unified nation, the patchwork collection of human colonies came to be known as Hominid space. Over the course of the next century, these nations would come to struggle and clash, with earth desperately trying to keep the peace among them. Attempts were made to form a unified human government, but it was rejected by many as a naked example of earth’s hegemonic ambitions.

Twenty two years ago one of these nations, the Empire of Garond, unleashed a campaign of total subjugation on the other human nations of Hominid Space. Armed with massive humanoid war machines, Assault Breaching Armors or ABA’s, this all-out offensive led to the first great war for Hominid Space. The freshly expanded earth led Federation, bolstered by smaller nations unwilling to face the empire alone, managed to bring the war to a stalemate. However, instead of a lasting peace, both sides retreated to lick their wounds and prepare for a second war.

Four months ago, the second Great war for Hominid Space began, and now a lonely Imperial space ship ferrying one of the souls who will go on to play a key role in its outcome approaches its destination. Its objective is the complete and utter destruction of the defensive installation guarding the Ochrine System, opening a deadly new front for the war.

New Art from @trapagon.bsky.social. Many years ago when I first started out, I knew I wanted some kind of avatar to represent myself as an author. I knew I didn't want a male character, but I also thought I was cis, so a skeletal fox it was. While I still love the old art, I like this one more.

The starting line with the starting gear. Started as a Lancer in good old Gridania.

Second outfit, a few levels in once I managed to get the ability to go to different cities.

Oh and I decided to start on scholar to since it's one of my 3 main classes alongside Dragoon and Machinist. Seeing as how that last one is locked until heavensward, I'm going to be sticking to just two until then.

Story Idea, a young orphan boy eats a burger which has been stolen for him by friendly harpy who he calls his guardian angel because she kind of looks like his mom. Meanwhile the harpy wonders why fate would be so cruel, to choose an innocent child to be her partner in a battle he is not ready for.

I think the trick is that you have to a magical girl to work from to figure it out. figure out the character you magical girl needs and work out a fitting design from there. Like how I needed something cool and mature for my magical girl, so I went with a fox with dragon wings. (art by a friend)
