Earlier this summer I spent the week building a replica Iron Age roundhouse, using experimental archaeology to experience methods & tools, working with an incredible bunch of people. All so generous with their time & knowledge. It was hot work, but I learnt so much #archaeology #carpentersfellowship

Finding old shoes under floors is always thought provoking for me. Their placement & context is everything, providing opportunity to consider folkloric traditions. This small boot had been repaired extensively! #archaeology #buildingsarchaeology #context #historicbuildings

Ooo this is really good to know. This building was equipped with gas lighting - two fittings remained in situ when I visited! The first image is within a small lobby that likely had front door open fairly regularly, buffered by ornate timber & glazed partition, so wondered about ventilation etc

Yes 🙌🏼 at first I wondered if tobacco smoke had stained it, but it remained like this to all the walls, i was surprised snippets remained at all! Love a false wall sometimes 😂

Yes indeed!! I know what you mean… this was pretty hectic on the eyes a few weeks ago… 👀 Fabulous though, scheme was applied all up and through a large three storey stair hall 😬 would’ve been so jarring with our modern lens no doubt

Wowzaas! Do you not like the room because of this colour scheme? If so, that’s interesting in itself! Have you come across much internal marbling?

100%! This is a great excerpt! I found a similar detailing description to a 19thc building review recently! Came across a fabulous 17thc piece a few months ago which had remnants of reds and greens! I am now really focused on exterior colour loss, will pop you a message! Thanks Darren 😃

From excavating ovens to retrieving phased timbers from demolition works, evidencing a ghost medieval building significantly chopped and reorganised into the 17th and 18thc. Particularly loved recording phases of chamfered stops 👌🏼 #buildingsarchaeology #archaeology #archaeologist

Sometimes you know what you’re going to find, but never the extent. Here we have two phases of oven to a 17thc stack, with an in situ clome inserted into an earlier brick oven, with more phasing to uncover! #buildingsarchaeology #verticalstratigraphy #historicbuildings #archaeology

Intentional varnished marbling, new observation for me! Love identifying hidden decorative schemes. This had been applied along the string course into the service attic interestingly & carefully applied to each baluster - c.1860 reflecting other marbling across the stair hall. #buildingsarchaeology

Some up close details of the best bit of late 19thc hand painted marbling I’ve seen so far. This example was painted onto wallpaper with double red ashlar block lines allowing paper edges to meet, and subtle grey veining mimicking polished stone. #buildingsarchaeology #archaeology #paintedstone

Flyer for Session 22: Persisting through Loss: Archaeological Perspectives on Climate Adaptation and Biodiversity. The text reads:
As climate change and biodiversity loss accelerate, cultural heritage is experiencing unprecedented risks. However, from ‘soils to songs’, the archaeological record and living heritage also demonstrate remarkable human resilience—strategies of ‘persistence’—that have allowed communities, ecologies and landscapes to adapt over millennia. This session aims to highlight how archaeological and heritage expertise can contribute to transformative climate action and sustainable development.

Acknowledging the entanglement of environmental, social and economic domains, this session invites contributions that move discussions beyond simply documenting risk and damage and might include, but are not limited to:

• Archaeology of Adaptation: Reflexions on how past societies managed and adapted to rapid environmental changes and what these strategies offer contemporary climate adaptation.
• Heritage as a Sustainer of Biodiversity: Case studies illustrating how archaeological sites and traditional land management techniques protect and encourage biodiversity.
• Navigating Loss and Damage: Innovative approaches to documenting, interpreting, and communicating climate driven loss and damage within the historic environment.
• Local and Indigenous Knowledge: Integrating traditional knowledge systems with science-based climate policy to build local resilience.
• A Just Transition: Consideration of contemporary tensions around land ownership models, climate policies, and the historic environment.
• More-than-Human: How might the past inform a shift in attitudes and behaviours from human-centric to more-than-human planning and design practices?

Note: this is intended to be a standard paper session but the organisers are happy to support creative interventions. Submit paper proposals to: clb593[@]york.ac.uk
