yeah i feel like ripping off the bandaid with a couple weeks of signal work would have been kinder to people who use the g train
from abc7ny story:
The tunnel closure cut the LIRR's capacity by 20%, contributing to some service challenges for commuters. In May, a track fire disrupted rail service into Penn Station for three days, sending some trains to Grand Central Terminal instead.

The railroad hosted a press conference and ceremonial train ride through the rehabilitated tunnel on Monday afternoon.

The rehabilitation project began in May 2025 with the full closure of Line 2 to allow crews maximum access while minimizing disruptions across the region's rail network.

"We are going to protect every project performed around here, to get the same level of planning and risk reduction that came into being on this project," said MTA Chairman Janno Lieber.

The MTA was so concerned about the project's potential impact that Gov. Kathy Hochul urged Amtrak to perform the work at night and on weekends, a request engineers refused to honour.

When asked how much longer the project would have taken if work was restricted to nights and weekends, Warren LeBeau of Amtrak said, "It would have taken years-years longer."

The East River Tunnel system, which opened in 1910 and connects Penn Station with Queens and the rail corridor to Boston, consists of four tunnel tubes. Amtrak is rehabilitating the two tubes damaged by Sandy, with work on Line 1 expected to begin this fall and continue through the end of 2027.

Lines 3 and 4 do not currently require rehabilitation.

a comment on r/truckers pointed me to a delightful street view. the typical semi or box truck is 13'6" high... but there is a sign at the atlantic ave exit on the BQE that reads "all vehicles over 12'-9 must exit" ... so what is the truth?
street view of snarled-as-usual BQE with a bolus of trucks in the northbound lanes going past the atlantic ave exit, where apparently they are supposed to exitreddit comment in a thread on r/truckers that reads:

Only thing I can think of is exit 27, Atlantic Avenue, says all trucks over 12’9” must exit, but anyone that knows New York blows right past the sign. There’s no clearance issues in any lane anywhere on 278 even though many over passes are marked low.

I do remember hearing about a project where they lowered the roadway to avoid trucks having to get off and cut through the city streets years ago. Not sure when that happened or what highway it was or if it even happened at all. But could be related to the signs you’re referring to years back.

And there is a spot ON Atlantic Ave where trucks have to get on a service rd and jump right back on. Maybe thats what you’re thinking of?

fascinating way to describe climate change
From "Rotten news: New Jersey's beloved peach crop devastated by April cold snap" in WNYC/Gothamist:

“A lot of the peach farms down near me were filled with flowers,” said Lewis DePietro of Cherry Lane Farms in Bridgeton, who sells strawberries at the farmer’s market in Union Square. “Now I drive by and see the trees and I don’t see any peaches, barely.”

Allen Carter, president of the nonprofit New Jersey Farm Bureau, said some peach farmers have reported losing half their crop. He wants the state to step in to provide disaster assistance funding.

“It’s going to be a really rough year for farmers between the frost, the fuel, labor, and insurance,” Carter said.

“ The majority of farmers don't want handouts. They just want to be able to grow their crops,” he added. “But when Mother Nature speaks, not much they can do.”

“Once assessments are complete, we will move quickly to connect farmers with critical support, including crop insurance and other available state and federal resources,” New Jersey Department of Agriculture spokesperson Bella Walz wrote in a statement.

In the meantime, Alstede said he wants people to know there will still be New Jersey peaches this summer.

“It’s going to run out maybe a little bit sooner, but still plan that trip with your family,” he said. “More than ever, growers need to sell what they have.”
