📢 New paper alert! We explored N₂O fluxes in tropical cloud forests of Réunion Island. Soils emit negligible N₂O, and leaves & canopy soil have nirK and nosZ type denitrifiers. ☁️ The canopy #microbiome might help mitigate N₂O. Link: www.nature.com/articles/s41... #peatlandN2O #peatlands

The new global methane budget is now out! Seems to gloss over the measured 25-50Tg sink term in upland trees that was recently discovered (= or > to soil sink & prob more subject to change). Possibly because it’s not yet been included in models the authors use. Observations do matter though…

📢 New paper alert. We explored CH₄ fluxes in tropical cloud forests on Réunion Island. 🌱 Peat soils = CH₄ sinks 🌳 Tree stems = mild CH₄ sinks 🍃 Leaves = potential methanogen hotspots! ☁️ Canopy microbiomes matter more than we thought. Link: environmentalmicrobiome.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....

Hands-on with the hidden world: our master’s students are investigating soil and rhizome microbiomes from peatland forests, learning essential techniques like DNA extraction and qPCR to understand microbial community dynamics. #MicrobialEcology #SoilScience #PeatlandResearch

Fertilized soils are a major source of N₂O, a potent greenhouse gas. Our latest study by @lkuusemets.bsky.social shows how nitrogen (N) fertilization rates, manure amendments, and crop types influence N₂O emissions and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). soil.copernicus.org/articles/11/...

Interactions of fertilisation and crop productivity in soil nitrogen cycle microbiome and gas emissions
Abstract. Fertilised soils are a significant source of nitrous oxide (N2O), a highly active greenhouse gas and a stratospheric ozone depleter. Nitrogen (N) fertilisers, while boosting crop yield, also...

New research alert! Pristine peatlands act as carbon sinks but emit CH4, while disturbed ones release more CO2 & N2O. However, climate change is reshaping these ecosystems. 📖 Read the latest in New Phytologist! #ClimateChange #Peatlands #GHG #ÜloMander nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Global peatland greenhouse gas dynamics: state of the art, processes, and perspectives
Natural peatlands regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes through a permanently high groundwater table, causing carbon dioxide (CO2) assimilation but methane (CH4) emissions due to anaerobic conditions....
