Roman Polanski had an $8 million galleon built for his film Pirates, and it ended up docked in Genova as a tourist attraction. It’s a fun ship to tour; families with kids were having a blast. It includes Walter Matthau’s pirate coat and the Aztec throne he hoped to steal. If only it could go sailing

Ah, the late 1960s, when a psychedelic trip like Wonderwall (out today, 1968) could get financed. The great Jack MacGowran is the nutty professor obsessed with bombshell neighbor Jane Birkin; his spying on her makes Rear Window look like Disney. A deliciously trippy, self-indulgent bit of whimsy.

Once is enough movies: you’ll either admire the shockingly bold vision of Pasolini’s Salo (out today, 1977) or think it’s sh*t. Poop dining is a stretch on the “entertainment” meter, but Pasolini wanted to devastate those bourgeois audiences. He succeeded. A midnight movie fave; proceed cautiously

Comic book superheroes have faced some vile villains, but is the greatest villain of all .. themselves? Captain America taking on Captain America is an epic battle; the evil doppelgänger with the same strength. Comics don’t use this motif often, but when they did, it was pretty fab. Go, Captain, go!

Fred Zinnemann made a powerful Holocaust drama in 1948’s The Search, but the Oscars looked even more favorably when he returned to the subject in Julia (out today, 1977), anchored by tastefully emotional performances by lefties Jane Fonda & Vanessa Redgrave.A solid prestige pic, but Search is better

National guilt tripping over atrocities in the Algerian war: Alain Resnais’ Muriel (out today, 1963) doesn’t hold much relevance for U.S. audiences except as a Vietnam metaphor. Still, I love Delphine Seyrig as the grieved mom of a returning soldier who was naughty in Algiers. Feeling guilty yet?

Welles’ Macbeth (out today, 1948) is famed for using old western sets for some expressionist flair, but at 80 minutes it feels like Shakespeare cliff notes. Welles is a suitably hammy Macbeth and Jeanette Nolan chews nails as Lady Macbeth; but Welles’ Othello & Chimes At Midnight worked much better

Some movies have great scripts or eye-popping locations: Gloria (out today, 1980) has Gena Rowlands! Single-handedly taking on the mob to save a boy, she’s tough, she’s vulnerable, she’s gritty - and fabulous! I can watch this film endlessly because hubby Cassavetes sure knew what his wife could do!

Just read: The Night Walker. Gotta love that Robert Bloch: the Psycho author gave William Castle a delicious horror script about a woman tormented by her erotic dreams, filled with suave Freudian kinks; this novelization is equally fun and a treasure chest for dream analysis freaks out there.

The two faves Woody Allen films not directed by Woody, Play It Again Sam & The Front (out today, 1976), don’t feel similar; Sam is from Woody’s play but The Front is one of Martín Ritt’s best social dramas. A big hit in France, J’Accuse (out today, 2019) broke the Polanski censorship barrier last year by playing at U.S. film & Jewish festivals. A stunning cat-and-chase about finding the truth in France’s notorious Dreyfus scandal, it remains one of Polanski’s most riveting films - a French Chinatown.

The Verve really hit their stride and marked a creative peak with Urban Hymns (out today, 1997), and not just for the popular hit “Bitter Sweet Symphony.” Tracks like “Lucky Man,” “Space And Time” and “The Drugs Don’t Work” rank among the band’s best; chirpy Brit-pop was rarely so much fun to hear.

Mel likes hiring private tour guides when we visit new places so we can see and do more, and our tour guide in Tunisia certainly guided us to some remarkable historic sites we might not have found on our own. That includes the ancient city of Carthage that was destroyed by Rome. We loved it.

Isn’t it odd that an easy way to start a debate among cinephiles is to ask if Hamlet (out today, 1948) is the greatest Shakespeare movie ever? Olivier won best actor and his film got best picture, but many mourn the loss of Treasure Of The Sierra Madre. My heart still goes to Hamlet, though. Bravo!
