Twenty-five years later, a new beacon towers over Manhattan. I try to avoid it. It's not my towers. Philippe Petit will never use it for a tightrope walk. But it does light up, and that's what Manhattan needs today. We all could use a little light.

Then again, maybe we're locked in that war with ourselves, a war between those who learned that violence causes problems and the people who learned violence is the only solution. Some days it's clear who's who. Some days it's less clear.

We raised a generation of children who have never known an America that was not locked in a pointless war. They had a brief moment, during the Biden administration, when we weren't. But now we're back, unable to exit a senseless war between murderous tyrants at home and abroad.

It was the demolition of the invisible shield around the nation, the one manufactured by our blind belief in our strength and moral vision. We lost that in one day. We discovered we are not good at being vulnerable. We lash out. We ruin things. We hurt people.

We remain permanently altered by the events of 9/11. It wasn't just the number of people we lost in the attacks, though we mourned them achingly. It was how close we all were to being on those planes or in those towers.

In 2008 we chose a different direction, one of hope mixed with caution; in 2016 most of us wanted to stay on track, but that violence and insanity roared back anyway. And then in 2024, it did it again.

We settled into the post-9/11 America, the one where we chose violence and insanity over truth and justice. Osama bin Laden did that to us, but we basically did it to ourselves.

George Bush said all the right things for a little while. I was on his side. But then, fueled by trumped up claims and jingoism, he committed us to two forever wars for revenge and hegemony, and I was no longer on his side.

We later learned that it was New York's Finest fighting with New York's Bravest over the abandonment of the search for bodies. Everyone was exhausted over a month of futile work. So they fought each other. No one won.

My father, not yet a resident of New York, met me in Manhattan. We went to a Wall Street restaurant overlooking Ground Zero. It was like looking into the Dust Bowl. At one point a commotion occurred, people moving back and forth like a mob.

A few weeks later, when the skies were clear, I boarded an airplane for New York. At this point you didn't have to take off your shoes; Richard Reid wouldn't ruin it for everyone until two months later. For a moment, I wondered whether my plane would get turned into a missile. Only a moment.

I talked about Philippe Petit walking a tightrope between them, my favorite memory as a child. I wrote a post about about how things would be different now, about moral leadership and the need for nostalgia and the coming rise in hatred. We soon dismissed our team.

We shambled into work, as did most of my colleagues at Wizards. Someone asked me if they could leave. I said sure. The New Yorkers and I talked about how the Twin Towers transformed from boondoggles and eyesores during construction to bold symbols now.

Evon wandered out of the bedroom and saw the TV was on. "What's going on?" she said. I responded, "I think something very bad has happened." The South Tower was still standing. Then it wasn't. I had hope The North Tower would stay up. Thirty minutes later it was gone.

This hunt was constructed in concert with the MrBeast and Salesforce teams by me, Elisa Teague, Eric Harshbarger, Tyler Hinman, Thomas Snyder, William Zambole, Shane Steed, Chad Brown, Ana Visneski, and Damian Puggelli. May you be lucky enough to have a team like that in your lifetime.

This is an amazing video deconstructing the Super Bowl Million Dollar Puzzle that we did. It takes our concept of the "serial killer wall," upon which we construct all our hunts, and blows it out physically. It's worth a watch if you are a puzzle constructor or fan. www.youtube.com/watch?v=82CX...

Here is an excellent piece on my frequent collaborator Eric Harshbarger's quest to solve the dilemma of "who goes first?" in board games. (Note: This image is not photoshopped.) phys.org/news/2026-08...

Dice design solves board gaming's most surprisingly complex problem—who goes first?
It took nearly 15 years, researchers around the world and enough computing power to search through a universe of possibilities to answer one question: Who goes first?

There are 95,000 polling places in the US. These chumps are going to be vastly outnumbered everywhere they go. Every Attorney General and Secretary of State should make it clear: they are not welcome.

The reason the Democrats will win the two most watched Senate races — Michigan and Texas — is RFK Jr. Michigan leads the country in cyclospora cases and Texas in screwworm, meaning we can't trust lettuce or beef. That's Trump and RFK's fault. Their kookery is going to crush the GOP in November.

Sure, corporate media, I get your need for "Democrats in disarray" drama, but I think you might be underselling the fact that Abdul El-Sayed is the handsome, caring, well-spoken doctor in every soap opera and Mike Rogers is an undercooked bowl of oatmeal.

This is a remarkable video from @mayor.nyc.gov Mamdani. He starkly states that Netanyahu must be arrested and tried. If he had the authority to do so, he would. Every Democrat should echo this and make it clear that if they regain control, they will ratify the Rome Statute and arrest Netanyahu.
