A poster promoting a band. Skeletal formulas of four-carbon alkyl radicals each don mops of black hair like a famous foursome from Liverpool. The poster reads: “ENJOY THE BUTYLS ON ORGANIC RECORDS”

A person wearing a black ski mask stands at an ATM labeled CASH with two back pockets overflowing with money. A figure with a black ski mask stands behind them with their arms tightly folded and taps their foot. A line of people with black ski masks trail behind. The title reads "Self-Checkout Teller Machine"

Enjoyed this discussion and it's preceding article of "journalists" using AI to pitch and sell fake stories. Our unique form of expression is an asset. But is in danger of getting lost in the noise

CS: Is this our equivalent of doping in sports—something we have to stay vigilant against?

NHB: Honestly, I think you guys are okay. I don’t think the Victoria stories that got published on other websites would get published on The Walrus or The Local. I think you have robust editing and have a great fact-checking process. I’m not worried about that. I’m more worried about the front end being inundated with garbage. How do you find what’s good, right? I doubt those publications that got burned are going to hire back their copy desk and fact checkers, but that is the most obvious move. That is, if you actually care about this stuff. If you don’t care—which I think is the case with some of these publications who are increasingly in the content business and don’t mind where it comes from—then that’s a different story.Screenshot from article: https://thelocal.to/fallout-from-ai-freelancer-investigation/

CS: My editor-in-chief role at The Walrus has overlapped almost perfectly with the ChatGPT era. And so, I’ve been obsessing about it a fair bit. I find it’s shifting how I think about pitches, moving away from questions like, “Is this interesting enough to report out?” and towards, “Is there a mind at work here that readers want to spend time with?” We’re inching toward more seasoned writers—writers who can turn a phrase, and have vocal print. And we know that because they’ve published other things. They have a voice and have built a career around that voice.

Chatbots can replicate the skin of their sentences, but can’t incarnate the substance. That is probably too weird for what we’re hoping for in this conversation!

ON THE COURT

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Coming off the bench for the fifth consecutive game, Michael Jordan enjoyed his finest performance since returning from the injured list with a game-high 34 points in 26 minutes. Who needs two good legs when guile gets you to the line 12 times?

PLAY OF THE GAME: What was Sam Cassell thinking? With the Bucks trailing by 13 points with 2.3 seconds left in the third quarter, Cassell got himself ejected on purpose by punting the ball off the scoreboard.

OFF THE BENCH: With Cassell and Glenn Robinson prematurely in the locker room, Greg Anthony had his best game in a Milwaukee uniform with 20 points and five assists.

STATISTICS SHEET: The Cassell and Robinson antics overshadowed a good all-around game by Anthony Mason, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The US government collects less in taxes compared to a 50 year average, therefore we must provide you less services

# What about the tax breaks?

The “Big Beautiful Bill” extends Trump’s sweeping tax cuts from 2017. When asked if he would be willing to forgo these tax cuts to help balance the budget, Johnson said no.

“No, I do not want to increase anybody’s taxes,” he said.

In 2024, tax revenues were 16.6 percent of U.S. gross domestic product, according to the economic firm CEIC Data. Johnson said that this is right around the 50-year average of 17.4 percent.

“We need to recognize that reality, and we have to start bringing spending back in line with that,” he said. “You can try punishing success. It just doesn’t work.”

DC did a great job reconstructing 8th Street NE. I used to bike this segment of the MBT regularly - you could barely see the traffic lines and the width encouraged reckless driving. This protected bike lane looks much safer for everyone #bikedc #bikemke

Irony a bit too heavy handed here

SJP member Thomas Cavanaugh said he’s also felt pressured by the university. Cavanaugh protested at a closed-door student event for former Vice President Kamala Harris in October asking her about the conflict, calling it a “genocide.” He said he initially left willingly after being asked to, but was soon forcibly carried down the stairs and out of the building.

“I was invited to a meeting on my public campus, by a public official, right? Who was also here to get my vote, that’s why she was here, and I posed a provocative question,” Cavanaugh said. “If you can’t do that as a student on your public campus, what right to free speech do you have?”

UWM Police cited Cavanaugh for disorderly conduct, but the charges were recently dropped by Milwaukee County for his completion of 20 hours of community service. He now faces separate charges from UW-Milwaukee for the same thing, cited for disorderly conduct under UW System conduct policy.

After the university’s investigation, disciplinary probation was recommended. He has appealed the ruling, but his appeal hearing is currently without a date.

The undergraduate pre-law student was set to graduate this spring, but the charges may threaten his ability to graduate. He said there is a possibility the ruling will prevent his enrollment in a constitutional law class, which he needs to graduate.

The new administration has disintegrated education research contracts. We will no longer be able to compare educational performance of US students to other countries. For instance, we will no longer know that the US performs significantly below almost half of OECD participants in Math (PISA 2022)
In the United States, 7 percent of 15-year-old students in 2022 were top performers in mathematics literacy, scoring at proficiency levels 5 and above; 34 percent of students were low performers in mathematics literacy, scoring below proficiency level 2.

In the United States, the percentage of top performers in mathematical literacy (7 percent) was not significantly different from the OECD average (9 percent). Compared to 70 other reportable education systems, the U.S. percentage was larger than in 33 reportable education systems, smaller than in 18 education systems, and not significantly different from 19 education systems. The percentages of top-performing 15-year-old students in mathematics literacy ranged from 41 percent in Singapore to nearly 0 percent in 10 education systems. Estimates are not reportable for 10 education systems because reporting standards were not met.

In the United States, the percentage of low performers in mathematics literacy (34 percent) was not significantly different from the OECD average (31 percent). The U.S. percentage was larger than in 31 education systems, smaller than in 43 education systems, and not significantly different from 6 education systems. The percentages of low-performing 15-year-old students in mathematics literacy ranged from 8 percent in Macau (China) and Singapore to 92 percent in the Dominican Republic.

I included a proposed redesign of Capitol and Oakland to include a two-way cycle track, acknowledging it's purpose as a main artery but prioritizing pedestrians and bicyclists by - eliminating right turns on red lights (adding RTO traffic signals) - adding bicycle signals at intersections #bikemke
A mockup of a design that adds a two-way cycle track on W Oakland and S Capitol in Shorewood, Wisconsin. A few design elements that merit mention compared to the current configuration:

- eliminates right turns on red lights with signals at intersections
- adds bicycle signals at intersections
- eliminates parking and/or lane capacity on arterials
- relocates bus stops after intersections to promote safety for pedestrians and traffic flow
