Precisely. And it's not as if the scourge of Farage-ism has been eradicated. It's like dealing with the US while MAGA is still relevant and implementing tariffs on a whim.

Wait... but the same group of unionists keep telling those of us who support Scottish independence that we "had a vote X years ago." Once again, highlighting the double standards, when enough people in England want something, Westminster has to listen. With Scotland, they can just ignore it.

Wouldn't be a surprise, but it would kill the party in Scotland and Wales, and damage them in England, giving the Greens there a boost.

New MRP poll shows that the next WM election would see a hung parliament. The Lib Dems & Eng Greens, along with Lab, not being enough to get a majority. Requiring seats from PC &/or the SNP. Or perhaps, Labour will form a gov with REF or the Tories rather than rely on Scots and Welsh having input?

You're making our point for us. And history teaches us it's not a good idea to suppress a people and a nation's voice. The troubles in the north of Ireland should tell you that. It would also not be a good idea to count on them if you ever need their back.

I've been thinking for a long time, it just takes one hung parliament, one where one side needs seats from the SNP, to be able to form a government. And given the unpredictable, fractured multi party support these days, it's much more likely. Happened twice in 16 years already.

"breaking up our country" - Which country is being broken up? Unionists still haven't got it, have they? The UK isn't my country. Never has been, never will be.

"If I were a citizen of another country, I would consider it a privilege to be taken over by the USA. That's what everyone in the world wants." The words of a deluded fanatic. A level of arrogance beyond belief. In a healthy society, he'd be laughed out of the studio, and fired for such nonsense.

I really wish he wouldn't, and kept his trap shut. It has nothing to do with him, nor do we need his consent or support. Especially since he was on record recently, opposing Scot indy. And all this is about punishing WM for not fully supporting Trump's illegal war on Iran.

They've shown they couldn't be any less interested or willing to discuss it. They want to pretend it's the status quo, and ignore the fact that three of the four UK nations have anti-union parties in government. And the longer they ignore it, the greater the chance they'll ultimately lose it all.
010
Mike-in-Scotland @mikeinscotland.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
There's a lot of irony in Brexiteers, who talked of "control" and "sovereignty" and the right for a nation to manage its own affairs, and then for them to take the opposing view re the UK union and independence.

Mike-in-Scotland @mikeinscotland.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Like the UK offers more protection? If anything, it generally puts us at greater risk, by constantly meddling in foreign affairs. And had Scotland already been independent, we wouldn't have been dragged out of the EU, by a much larger country with 10x more political power than us.
120
Mike-in-Scotland @mikeinscotland.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
True. Though all those parties do form the government, or part of it, in each country. Only one country in the UK doesn't have an anti-union party in government. It's a remarkable fact that doesn't seem to get the attention it shou.d

Definitely. Though I do wish the taco man from across the Atlantic would stay out of it. Especially since he was on record recently, supporting the UK. And he's punishing the UK for not kowtowing to Washington's agenda, re illegal war with Iran. A rare win for WM.

it's time Westminster acknowledges the fact that 3/4ths of the union now have anti-union parties. The status quo is gone. The right to hold a referendum belongs with each constituent nation, and the governments they elect to power. Not politicians elected in another country, with priorities elsewhre
092
Mike-in-Scotland @mikeinscotland.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
That's for us to decide is it not? The EU didn't ask the UK how many EU referendums they wanted to have, even though they'd already had one before 2016. The EU recognized that it was the UK's right. The EU can refuse them entrance, not refuse them the right to leave. The EU is more democratic.
032
Mike-in-Scotland @mikeinscotland.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Exactly right. Implying the UK is a country, rather than a union. We're not seeking to separate from our countries. We're seeking to leave the UK, like how the UK left the EU.

They used to say that about the SNP. "Just a protest vote against the Iraq war" 19 years later, the SNP's just won their fifth consecutive election, with just under 40% of the vote. A healthy share for any election, let alone after two decades in power.

I also hesitate to use those words. But I don't know how else to look at it when we were told by the UK supreme court that we need the consent of a largely non-Scottish parliament (92%) to be allowed a referendum, and / or to leave. We're at the mercy of an electorate 10x Scotland's.

I believe studies have shown a lot of voters for unionist parties, also support independence. ie, 30-40% of both Labour and Reform. 5-10% of the Lib dems and Tories. Conversely, around 90% of the SNP voters support independence.

Interesting to me is just how low support for the union has sunk. In almost two years, there hasn't been one poll to find a majority (above 50%) in support for the union. It's hovering around the low to mid 40s. A fall from 55% 12 ys ago. And I believe it was regularly above 60% until the late 00s

Best ever results in Holyrood, for pro-independence parties. The SNP and Greens now hold 73 of 129 seats. Increasing their majority by adding another seat. Meanwhile old Tory voters seem to have have moved to Reform. And I think many have left Labour for the Greens? #scottishindependence
