I think that there may be some questions about bridges! Really looking forward to recording a special Arnhem podcast with Niall Cherry and the redoubtable boys from @hamandjampod tomorrow night. Not too late to drop some Op Market Garden questions in...

One for your diary if you are in the Ridgewell area on 29 October. I will be talking about the ill-fated Schweinfurt raid in the church frequented by many men from the 381st Bomb Group (H). Hopefully see some of you there.

The perfect culmination of a full day of SOE visits...Dr Kate Vigurs lectures on our hotel and it's links to the SOE. Absolutely fascinating presentation recounting the role of women in the battle against the Nazis in occupied Europe.

The Shuttleworth Collection to close the loop on SOE Agent insertion. Our afternoon began with an unexpected Spitfire display ovr the airfield, we then had an in-depth introduction to the Westland Lysander. Sobering to think of agents clattering down this ladder in darkness.

Our morning began with a visit to the excellent Military Intelligence Museum at Chicksands. A great place to consider the many facets of intelligence gathering and espionage through the Ages.

Today has included the SOE and OSS in our narrative. We visited RAF Harrington home of the USAAF Carpet Bagger squadrons. The museum is absolutely packed with special operations artefacts and exhibits. Highly recommended.

Audley End House this morning, known as Station 43 during WWII. The memorial in the foreground commemorates the Polish members of the wartime SOE who completed their training here.

We spent an enlightening afternoon in the Intelligence Factory. So much to see at Bletchley Park. Another great stop on the WWII Museum Intelligence & Espionage tour. The exhibitions really highlight the multitude of levels of intelligence that existed in WWII.

Beautiful blue skies over Coventry Cathedral this morning as we discussed the catastrophic Luftwaffe raid of 14 November 1940. The intelligence battle around what was known as the battle of the beams was constant.

Today was dominated by the Battle of Britain. We took some time to honour the Poles that fought alongside RAF Fighter Command when we needed them most.

The box that the B17 was delivered in? We had a great morning at the American Air Museum at Duxford. A great discussion about the morals of the Allied bombing offensive and a debate about the strengths and weaknesses of the B17 and the B24.

It's been a long day today. We have spent time considering the horror and inhumanity of Dachau and the evil system of which that camp was just a part. After a long drive we are now in Austria still following the 506th PIR as they push on to reach the end of the war.

A sobering visit to the stark environs of KZ Dachau today. The visit underpins the 'Why we fight' message running through the Band of Brothers series final episodes. Reinforcing the just cause of the Allies in liberating Europe from Nazi oppression.

Another very enjoyable day on the WWII Museum Easy Company tour around Bastogne. Quite interesting to see the events of December 1944 through a single small unit. Watching @BattlefieldDisc create and maintain his narrative and a wider historical context is interesting.

I have to say the quality of presentation and the historical content of the exhibits at the 101st Airborne Museum in Bastogne is second to none. What an outstanding Museum. Certainly, not to be missed if in town.

Always good to start the day with gliders. Today it's the simply superb 101st Airborne Division Museum in Bastogne. Operation Repulse, the parachute and glider resupply of the Belgian town is rightly highlighted.

The second Horsa was flown by two volunteer pilots from the Royal Australian Air Force. The two men had assisted with the training for Op Freshman and stepped forward to fly Horsa 2. Their sacrifice is sadly little known.

Mike Peters @mikehistorian.bsky.social · 27/08/2026

Sgt Peter Doig was also one of the very early candidates for glider pilot training. The GPR was very much in a fledgling state in the winter of 1942. The RAF bomber crews tasked to tow them into battle were equally inexperienced as tug pilots. A lot was being asked that night.

Staff Sergeant Strathdee and his co-pilot, Sergeant Peter Doig, were piloting one of two Horas gliders. They crashed at Flesebekken in Lyseheiene. Strathdee and several of the engineers were killed on impact. Those who survived the crash were subsequently executed by the Germans.

It was exceptionally poignant to visit the CWGC plot in Stavanger today. SSgt Malcolm Strathdee GPR and Sgt Peter Doig GPR we're both volunteers to fly one of two Horsas on 20 November 1942. Neither man had the necessary flying experience to pilot a Horsa in such conditions.

On 18th October 1942, Hitler issued the Fuehrerbefehl which accused Germany's opponents of using methods that did not conform with the accepted laws of war and the Geneva Conventions. Many of the Freshman troops that were captured by the Germans were later unlawfully executed.

Finally, after many years I found my way to Norway and visited the graves of many of the men who died on Operation Freshman. It is especially significant for me as the ill-fated Freshman was the first glider-borne operation mounted by British Airborne forces during WW2.

Personally I believe that omitting the swastika symbol is literally airbrushing the Nazi heritage of the Luftwaffe out of our awareness. It encourages the myth of the good German/Luftwaffe. We should accept history warts and all.
