One of my grandpa's best friends jumped into the Netherlands during operation Amherst. He told me that aside from the way they held the Germans/Italians back during the battle of Bir Hakeim, that is what he was most proud of.

I guess? One of the most egregious mistakes is just how incredibly wrong (and I mean factually incorrect) he was about the GCMA. If his "they just abandoned them" studd was true, then my grandpa and several of his would literally all have died. None of is supported by the archives or the veterans.

One thing I didn't know about until recently was that French Navy SOF was doing coastal raids/recces during the 2011 NATO intervention in Libya. The idea that the French military is woke or unwilling to fight is genuinely insane to me. Easily the most aggressive western European military.

Yes, you did. And yes he did. He disbanded the 1er Choc, 11e Choc and 12e Choc, and a small fraction of their personnel was divided into what would become the CPIS and CPEOM, but this did not constitute an operational unit. This i why the GO of the 1er RPIMA became a SOF unit in the 70s.

The first three are all amazing, and the third contains the single most powerful and heartbreaking description of the battle of Dien Bien Phu. It helps that I know everyone who is mentioned in the book through my gramps. The fourth is just incredible. One of the best contemporary mil history books.
