Writing short stories taught me something novels couldn’t: You don’t get to ease into it. The reader has to care immediately or you lose them. I tried to carry that discipline into every chapter of BENEVOLENCE. In short stories, there are no warm-up laps. Every scene has to earn its place.

I totally agree. My own urban fantasy stories avoid romance for the most part, anyway. I feel strongly that not every relationship needs to be romantic to make a story interesting.

Why I #write I spent twenty years writing expert reports and claim documents for construction disputes. Precise Factual Utterly joyless I always knew the stories were in there somewhere. It just took moving to Costa Rica and a lot of beach time to finally let them out. Better late than never.

Unpopular opinion: Norse mythology is one of the most underused settings in urban fantasy. We get the same three gods in every story. Cranky Odin, Loki as comic relief, and Thor as muscle. The mythology is so much deeper than that. That’s why I wrote BENEVOLENCE. (Yes, Loki Cameos 🤣)

I think we hold on to 1976 with such fondness because as kids, it was just a fantastic summer. We didn’t know then that climate was actually going to become such a major problem for the planet. It was just a continental holiday for those of us who usually couldn’t afford it!
