Husband, father, meliponist, and apprentice social psychologist. My PhD examines the complexities that shape how psychosocial factors like cohesion, identification, and inequality impact adaptive capacity in response to climate threat.

Fair point, really just serves to create space for the attacking team

I remember stopping at a supermarket in Nambour well after borders had closed and there were a bunch of defiantly maskless folks looking for an argument… and another bloke in the deli aisle with no shoes, no shirt, but fully masked up 😂

I can’t get my head around what they hope to achieve, outsiders (who you suspect deep down don’t actually like you all that much) don’t persuade anyone. Their work in Dickson in 2019 was a head scratcher too- seemed like more of a team bonding exercise

Considerable progress has been made in the field of leadership. However, this is undermined by a commitment to ideas which have been repeatedly debunked that refuse to die--called "Zombie Leadership" This paper outlines 8 core claims of zombie leadership: leadershiphq.com.au/wp-content/u...

If the ute is being bought as a city runabout then it's poor. But I regularly holiday for 2+ weeks in places where you need a 4WD and you cant charge an EV without a generator. Battery mode would do 90% of my other trips (charged by our solar), so I'd love to pick one up second hand eventually

New study finds "social identification among male prisoners may simultaneously protect and threaten well-being, depending on the role of ingroup ties and identity centrality." BSky authors: @marc0marinucci.bsky.social @jolanda-jetten.bsky.social Open Access: doi.org/10.1111/bjso...
To be or not to be (a prisoner): Social identification as cure and curse via self- stigma and social exclusion

Research on social identification in marginalized populations has documented both social cure and social curse effects, suggesting that distinct identification dimensions may underlie opposite outcomes. This study integrated the Social Identity Approach to Health with stigma and social exclusion research to explore a dual pathway in which ingroup ties and identity centrality are respectively associated with greater or lower well-being among prisoners through their links with self-stigma and perceived social exclusion. A path analysis was conducted with a sample of 160 prisoners. Findings suggest that belonging and connectedness derived from identifying with fellow prisoners (i.e., ingroup ties) are associated with reduced psychological distress via lower perceived exclusion. In a context characterized by disconnection, social identification may provide a form of reconnection that supports well-being. Conversely, the personal importance attributed to the prisoner identity (i.e., identity centrality) was associated with greater self-stigma and perceived exclusion, with the latter mediating its negative association with well-being. Within a highly stigmatized group, the centrality of group identity may amplify feelings of exclusion, undermining well-being. Overall, the study advances understanding of the dual effects of social identification in marginalized groups and underscores the value of applying established psychosocial frameworks to hard-to-reach populations.

It’s a start, but a tax on profits (rather than revenue) sounds like it might suffer from the same loopholes that already get abused

A bit astonished that the 2023 World Cup debacle didn’t even rate a mention here…

There seems to be a cohort who emerged out of the young LNP in Queensland around the same time. Every time I see something particularly odious it seems that one of them is never far away

Excited to share our JEP paper! We surveyed Black Summer victims and found sense of community → adaptive capacity—particularly when valuing diverse interests is endorsed. Thanks to @jolanda-jetten.bsky.social @hemapreya.bsky.social @drcharlie.bsky.social authors.elsevier.com/a/1mcBZzzKDTmk-

If anyone is looking to mark off a bunch of squares in quick succession, there's a bloke spouting off in the LEAN FB discussion group who will give you A1, B2, C2, C3, and a whole lot of E5...

Okay, but my memories of being told that putting Plibersek in charge of the environment portfolio was a sign that they were taking it seriously are still pretty fresh…

An attack on the PBS would be enough to turn half the conservative voters in Australia into Maoist insurgents.

I think every AEC official should get to vote for their favourite (kind of like the Archibald packing room prize), with the winner reproduced at A3 scale, framed, and presented to the incoming PM by the governor general upon forming government.

It was the most concerning part, only a handful of informal votes, and all really low effort stuff. Our elections might be fine, but a key pillar of our democracy had vanished!

I was a scrutineer for the first time at the state election and it left me enormous faith in our elections (although the promised dicks drawn on ballots never materialised). Seems like more people should do a shift and learn how it works.

Makes sense, more like a set of guiding principles then. I really like the focus on the unified story and plotlines.

Apologies if this is a silly question, but have these lessons been properly captured (or has someone considered doing a PhD on it)?

I'm exhausted by all the people out there who are trying to prove they're each the most cynical world-weary disillusioned person who's not gonna ever do a fucking thing ever except dump on everything and expect to be admired for that. Wrote about that in 2016:
ynicism is first of all a style of presenting oneself, and it takes pride more than anything in not being fooled and not being foolish. But in the forms in which I encounter it, cynicism is frequently both these things. That the attitude that prides itself on world-weary experience is often so naïve says much about the triumph of style over substance, attitude over analysis.

Maybe it also says something about the tendency to oversimplify. If simplification means reducing things to their essentials, oversimplification tosses aside the essential as well. It is a relentless pursuit of certainty and clarity in a world that generally offers neither, a desire to shove nuances and complexities into clear-cut binaries. Naïve cynicism concerns me because it flattens out the past and the future, and because it reduces the motivation to participate in public life, public discourse, and even intelligent conversation that distinguishes shades of gray, ambiguities and ambivalences, uncertainties, unknowns, and opportunities. Instead, we conduct our conversations like wars, and the heavy artillery of grim confidence is the weapon many reach for.

Absolutely! Very keen to learn about it out of general interest, and because I’d like to know what is actually useful when it comes to political participation
