Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 29/05/2025I'm really loving how you can convey complex concepts with ThreeJS in an interactive way. Here's another visualization I created for the motion collection device I developed. The first stage shows the data from an uncalibrated magnetometer. The second shows the data after it's calibrated. 010
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 29/05/2025I wanted to demonstrate how this medical device I worked on can collect motion data, so I added a live visualization of the acceleration and rotation. This all works in the browser with the 3D model! 010
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 28/05/2025I've been working on adding some 3D components to my portfolio, and it's been shaping up really well. Here's a preview! 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 22/04/2025Anyone can launch a hardware side‑hustle with just a laptop and internet. Need an editor that just works? VS Code is free. Need 3D + PCB CAD? Fusion 360 (personal) is free. Want to spin a circuit board? KiCad is free. 230
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 21/04/2025A few years ago, I reflected on the most impactful lessons I've learned in my career. From this, I found a clearer understanding of career growth and five profound mistakes everyone (intern to staff engineer) should avoid. Here are my notes:mikebuss.comFive Early Career Mistakes I Had to Learn the Hard WayA reflection on five career mistakes I've learned—and how avoiding them can accelerate your professional growth. 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 21/04/2025In one of the infinite dimensions out there, I'm starting as the CEO of Microsoft on Monday. My first priority? Stopping Windows from requiring you to restart so damn often. 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 20/04/2025I've had fantastic success with the Bambu Lab H2D. There hasn't been a single failed print, including those with support enabled. 010
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 20/04/2025The dual-AMS mount worked out really well. I printed it with PETG-CF (carbon fiber) and it feels solid. I would highly recommend this to anyone who doesn't want to stack their AMS systems (or have them off to the side). 100
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 19/04/2025Printing some desiccant containers for the AMS 2 Pro. Second AMS arrives today! 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 19/04/2025Printing with carbon fiber (PETG-CF) for the first time. Cross your fingers! 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 18/04/2025After using a tiling manager for macOS (Aerospace) for a month, I'm switching back. Unfortunately, Apple makes building a true tiling manager really difficult. It had to do things like hide windows in the bottom left, but you could always see them. Also, rearranging windows was super jittery. 000

Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 17/04/2025What resources do you use for learning Fusion 360? I need to brush up soon. 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 16/04/2025After working with the Bambu Labs H2D for a while, I decided to grab a second AMS 2 Pro. Now to find the right way to mount them. Maybe this? makerworld.com/models/1281134 010
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 15/04/2025If I'm in a coma and someone suggests an experimental procedure, just say no. I am NOT getting Black Mirrored. 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 15/04/2025After four incredible years, I'm wrapping up my time at Qr8 Health. I'm grateful for the journey and the brilliant people I worked with. I'm now exploring what's next—if you're building something meaningful and think I can help, let's talk. 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 14/04/2025I strongly considered using Rust or Swift to write firmware for my latest embedded project, but there's always that risk of hitting unexpected compatibility issues mid-project. Went with trusty C this time—but I'm still rooting for Rust! 120
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 14/04/2025What's your preferred microcontroller for low-power applications? I used a nRF52 for a project and I can't imagine anything else being better. It has BLE support and you can add WiFi with a companion IC. Phenomenal developer experience & support. VS Code for the IDE. Excellent debugging tools. 031
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 11/04/2025Literally every day my Mail app will say I have unread mail when I don't. Usually this happens when I archive the message on my phone. Opening the app, tapping "Get new messages", filtering/unfiltering, nothing fixes it besides quitting and reopening. Happens on iPhone too! 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 11/04/2025If I could pick any project to work on, it would be a combination of custom hardware, firmware, software (maybe a companion app), and 3D printing. Give me that and I'll work so hard I forget to eat. 120
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 10/04/2025The different AI tools (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) are surprisingly good at comparing different microcontrollers for new hardware projects. I'm choosing between the nRF52840 and the nRF5340 for a project and it cut down on the research time considerably. Gemini's "Deep Research" is excellent, too! 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 10/04/2025When someone like Christopher Lawley - famous for using an iPad as his primary computer on YouTube - says he's switching to the Mac, Apple should listen! 100
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 10/04/2025Thinking of rewriting my blog (currently NextJS) to use a static site generator like zola (written in Rust). But, I rewrite it almost as often as I write posts for it, so maybe not 🤦 020
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 10/04/2025My new favorite YouTuber is RobertFeranec. If you're interested in building custom electronics, you should absolutely check him out. He basically gives an entire electrical engineering degree in video form. 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 09/04/2025OK, it's possible I went a little too far on this upgrade cycle... These will replace a 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro. It's great, but I should have went with the smaller model. I want a beefy setup on my desk and a portable-but-capable laptop when I'm on the go. Trying something new! 010
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 09/04/2025Are there any good Product Requirements Document templates out there? I've just been using the Google Docs template for "Project Proposal" and then hacking away at it 🤷♂️ 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 09/04/2025After weeks of procrastination, I'm finally kicking off my generator shed project! Up until now, powering up the generator during outages has been a hassle: wheeling it out to the shed, covering it from the rain, and starting it, and hoping I don't get struck by lightning. It's time to fix this! 100
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 08/04/2025Never thought I'd see the day where a Gemini model out-shines ChatGPT and Claude, but we're there. Their 2.5 Pro model is excellent for most things. I compare it to o1/4o throughout the day and it's usually better. Claude is still better for coding, but the gap gets smaller every day. 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 08/04/2025I took the plunge and upgraded to a Bambu Lab H2D printer. My Ultimaker S3 will still be around, but it will be more of a "secondary" printer for now. I considered getting a FormLabs 4, but the health risks associated with resin printers make me uneasy. Maybe one day! 110
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 10/02/2025I really like the Bluesky UI. It feels snappy, and I never have to hunt for anything. 000
Mike Buss @mikebuss.bsky.social · 10/02/2025I just updated my portfolio with some new projects, including one involving deep brain stimulation. Go check it out! www.mikebuss.com/portfolio 210
