Yeah, unfortunately it was nothing that sensible. I hope it makes you feel better that this does actually sometimes happen to engineers too! :)

But this one professor on my committee was like, nope, not acceptable, before you worked on the algorithms that were your actual thesis topic, you should have reinvented everything that already exists yourself.

My thesis was looking at algorithms to better reproduce the perceived forces experienced by a pilot in a flight simulator compared to an actual airplane. My input was the forces generated by the plane, and I used the software the flight simulator would actually run to generate test cases.

Not to take away from the point this post is making, but it just reminds me about how I did actually have to argue during my engineering master’s thesis defence why I used existing flight simulator software to test my algorithm instead of reinventing the concept of airplanes from first principles.

I'm in the middle of a multi-month long test to see if I can manage health issues with diet changes, and going into fall it feels like I don't know how to feed myself again. Almost every recipe I've saved has coconut milk, which is currently firmly on the avoid list.

I write the National Professional Practice Exam for my engineering license in a month. I just bought the practice exam and scored 85%, so I seem to be in good shape for that. (Pass is 65%) As expected, the law questions are where I'm weakest, so I'll be studying law in my spare time this month.

Unless there’s something unexpected in the rest of the meeting, this probably concludes my judgey commentary of local politics.

He’s tried to pivot that it’s not about the cost, it’s about the principle. Even though for weeks it’s been a conversation about cost. Also the quote he’s trying to claim is the “right number” doesn’t actually meet the town standards.

He’s both trying to argue that the deposit makes the cost of housing unaffordable and that it’s barely any money and it’s the principle of the thing that he’s concerned about.

Oh, the mayor is so done. He’s calling out all the inaccuracies and pointing out that he knew all the rules before he started and it should have been in his business plan. That this is developer-guy trying to change the rules, not that the town won’t work with him.

He repeatedly complains that the politicians on town council are taking a “political approach.”

It seems like this entire presentation is to say that he’s sad that he has to follow the rules and that council wasn’t receptive to his demands last meeting to make an exception for him.

He really wants council to know that there was no path forward to negotiate the amount for the deposit that they told him last time was not negotiable.

Oh, he appears to be conceding that he has to pay “the wrong amount” for the required deposits. (The wrong amount = the amount required by the town to ensure the project is not left half-complete, that is based on clearly stated rules that everyone has to follow.)

I’m watching the recording of Monday’s council meeting, and guess who is back. He starts with “I don’t think I need to introduce myself, you guys know me.”

To be clear, my brother offered me no apology on the call and made it clear that he did not consider himself in any way at fault. According to him I had victimized him and continued to do so by my actions of avoiding him whenever possible.

I don’t know the song, and am not clear on why I’m supposed to know a song about a state in a foreign country, and have not bothered to find out.

Thank you. It was devastating at the time, and family events are still challenging to navigate years later, but I don’t regret getting out.

I have made him experience the extremely minor consequence of not forgiving him and removing myself from his power, and this seems to be the worst thing I could ever have done.

As a favour to my mom, I agreed to have a phone call with my brother because he wanted to repair our relationship last year. He demanded I apologize for being unfair to him. I refused. I hung up on him when he started swearing at me.

I am still considered the problem because I have stated boundaries and rules when I visit home like never being alone with him.

My brother was screaming at me and throwing things and telling me to call the police if I was really scared, but I was the problem because I made that a publicly known thing outside the house by leaving.

Only tangentially related, but this thread is making me think about how when I moved out of my parents’ house because of my brother’s escalating violence, my dad lectured me about how I was upsetting him/making him look bad because I was acting like I didn’t trust him to keep me safe.

Everyone's interested in the hammock this morning
