I sat on the opposite side of the interviewer's desk this time around. Had a great convo with @drleahpayne.bsky.social about my coverage of James Talarico, the Christian/Religious Left, and whether Democrats can successfully tap into moral/religious messaging for the midterms and future elections.

This is a minor pet peeve, but as a Southwest Virginian, when Marylanders claim that John Denver's "Country Roads" is about them, I grimace. The Blue Ridge Mountains barely touch Maryland, and the Shenandoah River joins the Potomac at Maryland's border. I'm just saying their case is weak.

Progressive faith org, Faith In Public Life, is shutting down its operations by Oct 31st, according to its FB post. It’s been one of the more stalwart progressive faith orgs in DC. This reflects what I and others have reported on: The religious left has struggles with funding in the 2nd Trump era

One challenge of having an academic bent as a writer and journalist (especially as I recently completed my Master's program) is that I find my first drafts littered with sentences in the passive voice and examples that 'tell' rather than 'show'. It was much worse during school. Anyone else relate?

Look, you are allowed to be a Catholic and say the pope got something wrong. But if you make a public statement like "Looks like the pope forgot a little thing called 'Just War Tradition' that says sometimes God *loves* war," then you are plainly too stupid to be in charge of wars, or anything else.

MAGA has a strong isolationist wing that Carlson, MTG, etc, represent. This wing will be harder to maintain in the MAGA coalition. And Vance is too connected right now with the actions of Trump to win them over. All of which makes me think that Carlson is gonna make a run for the presidency.

As MAGA religious groups become more radicalized, it’ll likely be a lot of infighting between the Catholic Integralists, far-right Reformed and evangelical/charismatic Dominionists. Their coalition is actually a lot weaker since each branch feels theologically superior to the other.

3. An odd theological aside: the profound religious chasm between Talarico and these guys notwithstanding, *both* of their faith traditions (PCUSA and CREC, respectively) are Calvinist. Calvinism has a much, much broader spectrum of interpretations — especially politically — than many people think.
