Researchers analyzed 40 years of satellite greenness data and tracked the center of mass of global vegetation. They found that the planet’s center of greenness has been shifting northward and eastward and that this movement has accelerated over the past decade. eos.org/articles/ear...

As described in the paper the projection to the lat-long surface leads to an error and is misleading ... (multiple vectors can have the same lat-long positions) ...that is why a x,y,z-version is needed.

We needed to show the centre of mass of global vegetation greenness, which lies inside the sphere — that’s the blue trajectory you see. The transparency allows this ... if we chose a viewing angle that makes this visible. If you have a better solution, we’d genuinely love to hear it 🙂

The transparency is functional! The quantity we estimate (the centre of global vegetation greenness in this case) lies inside the sphere, while the data are on the surface. We made the sphere transparent to show both the interior point and the surface pixels contributing to it @gdkrmr.bsky.social

🌍 The earth’s green is increasing and its centre is moving north-east. Vegetational shift to the north is even stronger in the southern summer – surprising new facet of #globalgreening 🌱 Published in PNAS 1/x
The greenness of the Earth’s terrestrial vegetation changes throughout the seasons. Researchers can calculate the global “green centre” and track its movement over several decades. They have observed a gradual shift towards the north-east. By Ida Flik. https://greenwave.earth/

The wave of green that sweeps Earth from the north in boreal summer to the south in austral summer is shifting due to climate change. Researchers found the centroid of the wave moving northward since 1982 and eastward since 2010. In PNAS: ow.ly/PjPU50YmYKz
Global greenness in September. Shown is a globe depicting average global terrestrial greenness in September, visualized as “height over ground” and averaged over the period 2000–2023. Greenness is derived from satellite remote-sensing observations provided by NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and illustrates the large-scale spatial distribution of vegetation activity across the terrestrial biosphere.

One conceptual aspect I especially like: We can now quantify biosphere change in kilometres per year — turning abstract phenological shifts into something like a combined compass and speedometer for the planet. 🧭

Why does this matter? Vegetation regulates carbon uptake, water fluxes, energy exchange, and biodiversity. When the global centre of vegetation activity moves, Earth system functioning moves with it.

Miguel D. Mahecha @miguelmahecha.bsky.social · 23/02/2026
But the changes were surprising: 🌱 The centre of vegetation activity is shifting northeast. 🌱 Both hemispheric summer turning points are moving northward 🌱 The movement has accelerated over roughly the last 15 years. 🌱 The north–south seasonal swing is shrinking.

If these “green weights” were updated every day, the equilibrium point would continuously move — tracing a seasonal flight path across the globe. That moving point is what we call the global green wave.

Miguel D. Mahecha @miguelmahecha.bsky.social · 23/02/2026
Now imagine adding weights only where Earth’s vegetation is green at a given moment. In January, Southern Hemisphere ecosystems pull the centre downward. Months later, Northern ecosystems take over. 🌍

Imagine a perfectly symmetric ball floating in water. If you attach weights representing land masses, the ball would orient so that the geographic centre of land points downward. 🏐
