Playing defense and constantly debunking can be exhausting — and ineffective. By sharpening your listening skills, you can actually “pre-bunk” harmful narratives, leading to more productive dialogue in the long term with your loved ones.
Now let’s look at an example of what this might sound like in practice:

Values: Themes like family, community, safety, opportunity, diversity, fairness, due process, dignity, respect, shared humanity, perseverance

“Immigrant families are a critical part of our community…”Defining the problem: Themes like this administration’s militarization of immigration enforcement, racial profiling, ICE abducting our neighbors, violating due process

“...ICE is targeting our immigrant neighbors, and Trump’s bill allocates $75 billion for more detention and deportation. Much of this comes from our own tax dollars and will end up in the pockets of private prison executives…” Solution: Show how everyone in a community, including people who are immigrants, are impacted by a current policy—and how everyone benefits from a proposed policy solution.

“….our state needs to step up to make sure everyone is treated humanely and with due process… the federal government should stop spending money in ways that harm people and instead invest in making life better for everyone, including people who are immigrants…”Remember:

Empathy is not the same as agreement! Deep listening does not mean compromising your own values or perspective.

“I hear what you’re saying. Let me share another perspective too.”

Listen and learn more from them:

“What’s behind that for you?” or “What bothers you about that?”

    Normalize it’s ok to learn

“You know, I thought that too. But when I took a step back…” or “A lot of people are surprised to learn that…”

Speak to shared values, define the problem, and name a solution. Try bringing in a story or example of how you charged your perspective or a community member’s story.

Drawing from our research as well as the lessons from Kaba and Hayes’ essay, this guide will help you move your conversations beyond simply fact-checking misinformation and toward a deeper dialogue built around intentional listening, trust, and integrity. Read: www.bostonreview.net/articles/how...
How can we apply the practice of deep listening into our conversations about deportations, immigration detention, and the criminalization of Black, Brown, and Indigenous people? Here’s what we know from the work and research that we and our partners have done. People’s world view is driven by their values, beliefs, identity, and even lived experiences. When these conversations trigger strong emotions, people are more likely to be thinking in their “downstairs brain” versus their “upstairs brain.”

Upstairs brain:

Responsible for decision-making and planning, control over emotions and body, self-understanding, empathy, and morality.

Downstairs brain:

Responsible for basic functions, innate reactions and impulses, and strong emotions. Overrides the upstairs brain to respond to fear and focus on survival.Behavioral cues can help us move into our upstairs brain.

Here’s some examples of language designed to signal to the listener to think about something in a different way and facilitate moving into more thoughtful reasoning:

    When I reflect on it…

    When you step back…

    I really had to think…

When I put myself in their shoes…

I thought about the example I wanted to set…

    When I got some perspective…

If I was honest with myself…
Our next tactic is to use the VPSA model: Values, Problem, Solution/Vision, and Action.

Values: Shared values that you believe in, and will get your audience nodding in agreement

Problem: Paint of picture of harm, frame the problem as a threat to shared values

Solution/Vision: Positive, concrete, credible solutions leave people with choices, motivation. Who can enact this solution? What changes if solution happens?

Action: Give people something concrete that they can picture themselves doing: making a phone call, sending email, attending a meeting to learn more, etc.

Some of the hardest convos you’ll ever have with family and loved ones will be about topics like ICE and deportations. Just in time for the holidays, check out our new guide, inspired by @prisonculture.bsky.social and @mskellymhayes.bsky.social's essay on the practice of listening.
Beyond fact-checking: How to talk with your loved ones about immigration this holiday season

What Mariame Kaba and Kelly Hayes teach us about deep listening Conversations with loved ones can be hard.

Yes, we must continue to call out disinformation and shut down racist ideas.

But if our goal is to change hearts and minds, sometimes our most valuable skill isn’t all about what we say or refute. In a personal conversation, it’s about how we listen — even when it’s uncomfortable. In their essay for Boston Review, “How Much Discomfort Is the Whole World Worth?”, Mariame Kaba and Kelly Hayes write:

Political transformation is not as simple as handing newcomers a new set of politics and telling them, “Yours are bad, use these instead.” Instead, we will sometimes have to accompany people along messy transformational journeys.

Like so many other aspects of organizing, listening is a practice, and at times, it’s a strategic one.Kaba and Hayes continue:

We might need to hear something true that makes us uncomfortable. Listening deeply makes space for that to happen. But even if the person who’s talking is off base, we can often still learn by listening to them. Why do they feel the way they do?
